    Hi,

I'm bringing the gf to Paris for 4 nights for her birthday, in May.
It's a surprise, which she won't find out about till near the time.

I want to book a nice hotel, but I don't know where in Paris to stay. She's never been, and I've never been as an adult. We'll do all the sightseeing things, but would like to be close to coffee shops and cool bars etc aswell..

Can anyone suggest a particular area which would be nice?

    Thanks,

    Kevin.

I think the Opera area is suitable for you, walking distance to many sights, good metro connections, plenty restaurants and bars and a good choice of hotels.

    Seconded.

If you were used to Paris, I'd say anywhere in the 9th Arrondissement as there are some decent quality (but cheap) hotels further up towards Montmartre. However, for a first trip, the Opera area is really nice, if a little touristy.

You could also consider the Marais district, which is similar but might have slightly cheaper rates. It's got lots of specialist shops, small museums and galleries and is a stones throw from the Pompidou Center and Les Halles.

The paris districts go from 75001 to 75020, starting in the center and spirling outwards. Most of the tourist things to see are in 75001 to 75009.

The Marais is probably the most up-and-coming district that'll be too expensive for most people in a few years. See if you can find something around there.

The Opera (75009) area is fine but not always pretty-Paris (the type that you just step out of your hotel and start taking photos).

I would agree with PONSTER about the Marais ( address code 75004 and some of 75003) being a great area. However it is not "up and coming"..it has been up for 15 years or so! The Place de Vosges is one of Paris's most beautiful open spaces and this is the centre of the Marias area.Lots of boutique shops, intimate restaurants etc...also if flying by Ryanair the main Marais metro at St.Paul is on a direct line from the Porte Maillot metro ( Ryanair bus terminal area)

Have stayed in the Hotel Claridge Bellman 75008 in the past. Just off the Champs-Elysées so well located. Very Paris, rosemantic, can be expensive, but good deals now and then on hotels.com. Tried to book it for end of March but rates were too high so opted for Paris-RePublique Holiday Inn via ichotels.com instead. Hope this helps.

Was in Paris recently enough, stayed in the Montmarte area, we were doing it on the cheap, so stayed at a hotel called Hotel Tim, worked out to be 220euros each inc breakkie for 5 nights, was not the swankiest hotel, but was clean, staff were friendly, and we had a big room. Only a few mins away from a meteo station aswell.
Really loved the area though, full of lovely cafe/bars and restaurants, also really cool boutiques, good for the gf maybe!
As i said, wasnt too swanky, but did the job, and we were able to save our money to spend on other things, like lovely restauraunts and champagne!
    Enjoy the trip!

also, parents stayed in the InterContiential LeGrand Paris Hotel, was meant to have been amazing, but v.pricey, so if you really want to treat her, then this might be the place. Also close to the opera house methinks.
