For these narrow-course situations, there are too many muscles at play, and not even counting the uncomfortable outward wrist rotation you need for a full left-leaning turn, the response isn't as quick as you'd get from just using a traditional analog stick. Which, thankfully, you can set up in the control options to completely eliminate motion-based movement.

I think a lot of people were hoping for this to be a great game. It sounds, though that its another poor attempt at putting an established genre into motion controlled shackles. The drought may be longer than we imagined.

I can't think of any non-first party games coming out on Wii in the next 6 months that interest me.

After watching people play it i got doubts, then i watched a developer playthrough and my doubts grew. Watched both videos again and i wasn't going to buy it and after seeing the review i can strike it from my interest... Excite-Truck can cater for my 'crazy wtf flipz 'n' spinz' hunger.

Still, we might have Super Paper Mario mid-April.

this is no suprise. but then again 1up is awful.

The same thing happened with the 360 everyone went out and bought so much bogstandard rubbish and some still are and it will happen to the wii as well. people just get anything they can and expect every new release to be great.

1up is awful? What are you basing this on?

I find their stuff excellent, best online games journalism IMO.

i also find that they can be pretty biased, it seems like some of their reviewers like particular games consoles and slate anything that isn't on that.

For example, they had a rather tubby chap reviewing twilight princess and you could clearly see that he was anti-wii (he as much as said he wasn't impressed by the idea of a motion sensitive controller) and hence said the game was mediocre.

I think that's fair enough. There are enough reviewers there to offer opposing views on these things. The view that the wiimote is a gimmick is fair. A lot of people hold that view. It still remains to be proven otherwise. There are plenty of editors there who are very positive about Nintendo, and it certainly gets its share of attention.

gamesradar say the new control scheme is brilliant, and that the game is amazing. Got 9 out of 10.

I'd have to disagree there, i think that giving the flagship title of a system to someone who is biased against that system is very poor. It would be like asking someone who hates Microsoft and hated Halo 1 and 2 to review Halo 3. Reviewers are meant to have an open mind and when someone thinks that something is a gimmick then they can't give an objective review.

A review isn't the place to try and change someones mind regarding a system, a review should be about the game, period. It needs to be objective, and not coloured by the reviewers personal distaste towards a system or towards a controller.

If a reviewer isn't objective, and can't judge a game based on it's own merits then they don't deserve to be reviewing games, and potentially colouring others opinons.

Thats just my 2 cents though and I know i'd make a shíte game reviewer

Zelda got a 10 on the official 1up review. Other editors also gave their opinions which is fair enough.

I think you are referring to Luke Smith on the 1up Show. He's fairly cynical (and entertaining) about everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,661 ✭✭✭savemejebus

No, it wasn't him, it was some other guy who just really looked like reviewing the game was a hassle, and he didn't want to be there. Luke Smith is quite entertaining, as he backs up his arguments (from what i've seen of him). this other guy just seemed lazy.

Anyhow it doest matter, all just opinions.

Mark Bozon on IGN thought differently to the 1up reviewer obviously.
He gave the game 8.4, and his closing comments summed it up nicely I think...
When SSX Blur was announced, we were skeptical. When we found out about the controls, we were worried. Now that we’ve carved through every inch of the game, we’re convinced. SSX Blur for Wii isn’t a game for everyone, as its level of pure difficulty and motion control mastery is one of the highest on Wii. Still, for true gamers out there, SSX Blur comes as the ultimate challenge on Wii thus far. Ubers are an art form in and of themselves, track design is ruthless, and the Wii control is innovating, but not perfect yet. Screw ups with control are going to happen, but once mastery of this new control scheme is achieved players are going to unlock a truly invigorating experience on Wii. We’re dying to get a more stylized sequel down the line, hopefully built of entirely new levels (rehashing some of the runs from previous games is weak, EA), and we’re eager to see how EA polishes the Wii control down the line. SSX isn’t an everybody game. It isn’t Wii Sports Snowboarding, and it won’t be a no-brainer for just anyone. The game demands coordination, but is also one of the more rewarding games on Wii. Not everyone will take this new control form in stride, but for those that put in the time and really explore the depth of the game’s design, SSX Blur is one of the top titles on Wii, and a must-have for the hardcore.

Shock horror but it seems that EA's setting up a development studio dedicated to the Wii is paying off. It seems with Madden and SSX that only EA and Nintendo are the only two companies using the motion sensing to it's full potential.

Fair play to them. It's the best thing they have done since they released Terra Diver on the Saturn.

I'll more than likely be buying it. Reviews online are up and down, mostly it seems over the control. It looks like it's a touch control scheme to get used to and the negative reviewers just don't think they should have to work so hard to play the game. I don't mean that in a negative way towards those reviewers, I just think they feel it should be more accessible.

As people have meantioned having a reviewer that doesnt like the motion senser controls from the get go, is moronic. That said im sure the controls in Blur will be difficult its not like pointing the gun in COD and probably will have a steap learning curve. Fankly i need a challange. But as long as it reacts better than in COD ill be happy. Also the last three installments of SSX on the gamecube were brilliant. If i had one game from a fire (that is if my Wii and its games were safe) it would be SSX 3. i dont think ive ever replayed a game so much.

You're thinking of Gamespot, not 1up, the guy gave Zelda 8.9 and his reservations were about the game, not the system. He said it was a very solid game but still essentially the same as what they were putting out on the N64, with nothing actually improving with each iteration in the series.

Keep an eye on the Metacritic score, this could be another Red Steel, in that it splits people down the middle.

It's available this friday so I think I'm going to buy it for the challenge.

It's graphics seem quite nice too - anyone know if it's full 480p widescreen supported?
