Is there anything that can help to prevent coldsores, my lips have just erupted with them and I think that it is because I have just come back from a warm climate. I use Zovirax(??) but find that if it stops the coldsore at that location(which I usually find it doesnt) it just squeezes out at another location. Basically if that horrible fecker wants to come out he is.
I have also tried Lyseine amino acid and found that worked to a varying degree but recently the tables have gotten so big I dont have a clue what is in them.

Basically this is a rant.

Will there ever be a cure that you a totally cured of coldsores?? And why are they restricted to your lips?? I originally got mine on my cheek as I was too adorable as a baby, but that is a cross that I will have to bear:D

Afaik the virus lives at the base of your spine and decides to travel up along the nerves to your face. I think it affects your lips because the skin is so thin there ( too lazy to look it up ) , so you can thank whatever troglodyte that kissed you when you were a kid for it.While we're at it its some relative of herpes simplex too...

    you have it for life.
there are two types, type I and type II, thought to cause cod sores and genital herpes respectively, but now found out to be intercahngeable.

the cold sore virus resides in the trigeminal nerve (not sure about genital herpes)

Keep your immune sytem healthy, the virus only expresses as coldsore when yu are stressed.. and that also classically inculdes cold winds on the skin.
you cannot stop eruption but you may be able to limit it of you use treatment at first tingle

i know the feeling, i get cold sores from time to time too. As stated, once infected with the virus, you will have it for live. Once one cold sore fades, the virus lays dormand at the tip of the nerve. When the right stimulus comes along ( temperature , nutrients etc) for the virus, it will reproduce again.

Zovirax ( and similar products ) do help, but they wont prevent the virus attacking. Zovirax simply speeds up the rate at which the virus replicates and hence the rate at which it fades.

I find that Zovirax is useless and as you said just speeds up the process. Now I wonder how they brought this product on the market...."No boss I dont have a cure for coldsores but I have developed something that brings it on the patient at a quicker rate"....liquid gold,I think it really is overpriced, so much cheaper in Europe(I know if I dont believe it works why do I buy it:confused::confused::confused: ).

I know that they are not that bad just such a pain in the ass. As long as they stick to my lips and not my bits-n-bobs I will be alright:D :D

    And just for your information.

I note you said you just returned from a warm climate. This is definitely associated with flares of cold sores. Sunlight contains UV which acts to supress the immune system in the skin somewhat, hence the use of UV light therapy for some skin conditions like psoriasis. Often sunlight is known to activate or flare up the cold sore virus in people.

Just in case you were wondering!

Yep stuck with it for life until they discover something that will kill viruses.

The active agent in Zovirax is acyclovir, essentially it interferes with the DNA replication of the virus, thus effectively slowing it's growth rate. At this point your immune system should come in and mop up the virus. So as said above stay healthy, avoid things that irritate your lips, try not get run down and keep a spare tube of zovirax near you.

    Hi,
I am a long time sufferer of coldsores and like anyone who get them I know that its not the pain of one that's the problem - its how disgusting they look. I've tried countless different remedies and 'cures' including soaking em in earl grey teabags, ice, herbs and of course Zovirax - each as useless as the last. But over the last year or so I've started taking L-Lysine everyday. By itself I didn't find that it drastically reduced the number or severity of the coldsores but if you start taking up 2500mg of L-Lysine four times a day once you feel the 'tingle' and beyond, I've found that it definitely minimises the outbreak and 80% of the time the coldsores will be so reduced that they are barely noticeable and practically gone with 2-3 days - it certainly beats rubbing cream into it for up to 2 weeks until its gone. As far as I know there is nothing too wrong with taking this much Lysine as it is just an amino acid but as I said - this stuff is amazing and has certainly helped me a lot.

    Hope this helps...
