I'm having problems with a Inspiron 6000. Put Ubuntu operating system on computer last week. then a few days later when it was loading ubuntu, msg came up saying error or something, 'forced check', then froze. Then got recovery cd for fujitsu siemens with windows xp. Now I can get to windows but its the bare bones. I can use wordpad and other basic applications but nothing else. Cant connect to internet, play music, etc.
We are in france at the moment so sending it to Dell to get it repaired is a daunting task with the French bureaucracy. Prefer to try more possible solutions.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Donal.

did you delete the dell restore partition on the laptop, if not that would probably be useful to restore things to like new, just backup files first. http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/

otherwise going to the dell website and downloading all the inspiron 6000 drivers and software might let you the various bits and pieces working, wifi, sound card etc.

Why send it back for repairs? It doesn't sound there is actually anything wrong, apart from the error Ubuntu gave you. To be honest, it sounded a bit drastic wiping Ubuntu and using a recovery disk, but that's for another discussion.

The bottom line is as eolhc said - you need the drivers for your devices. Dell laptops usually have a hidden recovery partition where you can load these from. You usually have to press F1 or F2 at the BIOS screen to get into the recovery menu.
