Problem with Tfm streaming...(I don't do computers)

So I'm a little bit bored today, what with the schols and it being rag week and only managing to assinate one person before I was taken out, and so I was trying to tune into tfm and I downloaded windows media player to my mac and got the thing which converts the documents and files so that the mac can read them and such. Now I cannot get the stream to work. I have checked with other people, and it is working, though they were using windows. So anyway what do I do to fix it?

    thank you

Aaaahhhh!!!! Windows Media Player and macs shouldn't mix!!!

I've just given up hope of streaming T:fm on my mac, definitely won't be going near WMP, nothing is worth that!

Have tried getting it to work with VLC with no luck, will try again tomorrow and if I can get it working will let you know...

In the meantime if anyone knows how to make it work please let us know!

OK, so now I've had a go with Flip4Mac aswell (this allows you to play Windows Media files in Quicktime, WMP is no longer supported on Macs) but again have had no luck :(

Sorry Hils, will try again tomorrow if I get a chance :)

yeah I had tried all of them. Thanks anyway. I should probably study anyway.

Flip4Mac doesn't seem to play well with the proxy. I rolled back to WMP9 without F4M recently and now I can access (some) Windows Media streams again. Give that a try with a clean installation of WMP?

I have egg on my face on this one. I selected, installed, ordered, set up and implemented the streaming system. In my defence, ISS and HEANet were great in helping us but they had gone with Windows Media so we were locked into that (my original proposal was a Shoutcast MP3-style stream). And I have not one but THREE Macs. Oh well. What goes around comes around.

Just out of interest I did what xeduCat said and did a clean install of WMP9 (no Flip4Mac installed) and I was able to access the stream.

Hils, do you have authoxy running on your mac? It's needed for some programs to run through the proxy server, not sure if this is one or not but it works for me :)

Need more help, just ask ;)

I'll try a new installation tomorrow. At home now on a pc anyway, got the last show.

just to clarify. T:FM streaming works only with Windows Media Player (sorry but we cant do anything about that right now.
and its very possible to run it on a mac. im doing it right now.
and finally and the only reason im posting the show from 10-12 tonight is going to special. its the first time in three years of involvement that ive actually put a lot of though into my show so listeners would be appreciated.
Promises and Lullabies 10-12 on 97.3FM and www.trinityfm.com.

I figured it out this morning thanks to exbecs instructions, and it is now working.

    OK, now it's my turn...

This one is probably confined to Mac users too.

Has anyone had problems with Real Player and streaming? I have followed all the standard ISS config settings (they give settings but no further support, but I'm fairly sure I've set everything as requested).

It goes like this: something like an old-fashioned .RM or .RAM stream works fine (it prompts for proxy password and then whirrs away), but new-type streams that are .SMILs or have rtsp:// prefixes never seem to work. Example being RTÉ streams, which don't seem to work for me.

    Help?

bizzarely enough i know this. apparently real player will not function on the wireles network at all. but the cabled internetters among you in college should have it fine.

    Tried Quicktime?

Won't play Real streams. Real Networks (or whatever they're called these days) have locked down their systems fairly well, so you can only play their streams (especially the newer versions) on certain apps.

There is an add-on for Quicktime that allows you to play certain Windows Media streams (Flip4Mac, which is endorsed by Microsoft and by ISS!) but not for Real Media, that I know of.

I had read up about the SMIL format and it didn't insinuate that it was specifically a Real format.

SMIL should work through the college network - in past experience, there's no reason it shouldn't.

I've had problems on my mac too. I used to be able to pick up everything from RTE, but now it won't play at all. ISS moved me off of proxy1 and since then the problems have started. When I go to play something it asks for authentication to search.rte.ie instead of proxywhatever.

I have all the correct settings, and have been able to stream T:fm through WMP, just having problems with RealPlayer.

Actually, the new proxys seem a lot more closed down than the old ones. for instance, I can't get msn through the proxy anymore *weep*.

god forbid you talk to people in person.

Aww... Well in that case macs are great! Cos I can use one program to access most IM accounts - I don't use MSN, but I can access Google chat through Adium or iChat.

    Ditto. Adium rocks.

I can do my MSNing on my mac through ssh port forwarding, indeed I can get through the proxy quite sweetly for all my needs that way!
You can also do it too on a PC using Putty.
I'll leave Crash to figure out how to explain it! :)

see, its just annoying because it used be so simple - easy enough to run it directly through the proxy through http.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,311 ✭✭✭xebec

ISS actually give some support for MSN here. If you still can't run it, then I'd drop them a mail and see what they say, they were reasonably helpful for me when it came to configuring software.

i'd to look at that on someone else's machine the other day, those instructions(hadn't seen em, but did pretty much the same) , dont' really work, the connection test passes, but get errors doing the actual connection.(appear like intermittent MSN ones but using an alternate proxy worked...)
