i recently got a 30gb video playing iPod, my first iPod ever. managed to get a load of songs on it fairly painlessly. but then when i hooked it up to iTunes again, and hit 'sync', expecting it to just take the new songs i had put onto iTunes, it cleared itself out, so i had to put all the songs back on it.

thought i had figured out how to avoid that happening again, by telling it i would 'manually manage' the files myself. but when i tried to put some videos on it (how in the name of god does one do this?), all the songs disappeared off the iPod again. how do I avoid this ever happening, because it's an immense pain in the arse.

There is a check box somewhere - either in preferences or at the bottom of ITunes when you have the iPod connected to "update entire contents when autofilling" or something like that. I haven't got mine here with me at the moment so I can't tell you exactly where it is.

Winamp is getting pretty good for iPod support these days... not sure if it does album art yet though...

The question of alternatives to iTunes has been covered comprehensively in the FAQ.

None of the suggested programs allow you to import videos

Is there anything out there that allow you to import both music and videos ?

Yeah It does, I pressed Sync on my Itunes to see what it would do and it gave me a warning pop up, saying it would erase all my songs... Balls to that. Cancel.

I would second using Winamp if your not wanting to buy music from iTunes with DRM

As far as I know it will only delete the songs if they are not present in your library. It's similar to when you connect the iPod to someone else's machine. If the songs are on the machine then drag them back into the library.
