    Neil Cowley Trio
    Wednesday 21 March, Dolans, Limerick
Thursday 22 March, Sugar Club, Dublin

The UK’s most exciting new talent, Neil Cowley is a thoroughly modern piano player with an impeccable touch. In 2006 The Neil Cowley Trio released their debut album, Displaced, prompting the Guardian to claim the trio as 'one of the big jazz stories of the year', and The Independent to suggest 'Stardom beckons…' With inspirations as diverse as Shostakovich, Ahmad Jamal, Frank Zappa, Errol Garner, Taraf de Haidouks. Music of energy and emotional infectiousness underpin Cowley’s tremendous flair for creating beautiful, sometimes forceful melodies.

A child protégé, Cowley was performing Shostakovich at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the age of 10. Disenchanted by the competitiveness and rigour of the classical world by 17 he had turned his back on classical music. He entered the world of soul performing and recording with The Brand New Heavies and Zero 7 until he formed his own band, Fragile State. Cowley met the members of his current trio through soul and funk connections, but they evolved as an acoustic jazz group, making a debut album, and delivering live shows that move freely between whispering fragility and spaciousness and full-power grooving.

The Neil Cowley Trio has emerged as a highly creative and adventurous UK reflection of the approaches of such innovative contemporary keyboard trios as Esbjorn Svensson's and The Bad Plus. Yet this trio’s eclectic mix is all its own and could only be from London. When the energy of Neil Cowley's piano comes booming out of the speakers it's impossible not to think of early Clash.

"Stardom, such as it is in jazz, beckons"The Independent

“One of the big jazz stories of the year"The Guardian

"Thrilling... dynamic... one of the most distinctive debuts you're likely to hear this year"Jazzwise

"An absolute feast… Debut of the year."MOJO
