Forgive my ignorance on this subject but...

I currently have broadband access with UTV and would like to have wireless access. I think I need something called a wireless router, is that right?

Could someone please kindly explain how to go about setting up a wireless connection?

btw My laptop has inbuilt wifi (intel centrino).

Your best bet would be to get a wireless ADSL router, and hook this up to your phone line instead of the UTV ADSL modem you currently use.

Either of these will do the job:

    Who is your broadband provider?

It shouldn't be too hard to set up. You'll just need to take note of the settings on the old router and reenter them in the new wireless router.

As for connecting both wired and wireless computers, most routers allow you to connect 4 wired pcs directly to the router using ethernet, as well as wireless connections from other pcs.

I bought this modem, and it only works with Netsource or Eircom and our ISP is UTV. Is there an trick in the configuration that will get it to work?

If not, which modem works with UTV?

    Esperanza , try this ,

With you router connected to the pc , open a browser and in the address bar at the top type this

    192.168.2.1

And hit enter , note that this should take you directly into the router for setup , this number is common to a lot of routers ( all that I have seen so far anyway ) but if its not then the correct one will be in your manual.

Then go to the correct menu and enter details for UTV which are here ,

    http://www.utvinternet.ie/support/ans.asp?id=458&category=broadband&region=ie

Make sure that all those details match and also that you give it your account name and password.
Having done that you should be up and running.

If that router you have works with eircom then it should work with UTV because the settings are basically similar , however I dont see PPPoE on the specs for that router in Elara and you need this. (Eircom uses PPPoE too so if it works on eircom it will work on UTV).

If however that router doesnt actually have PPPoE then this one will work with any Irish ISP and if you connect it using the Network connection its a doddle to set up as the install routing walks you through.

That one has a modem also , this one is just a router ,

Once you have the router setup then any PC equipped with a wireless card can connect to it , if you dont want your main PC connected to the router then get a wireless dongle for it , and you can then disconnect and hide the router anywhere you want and all PC's should be able to connect , in other words once the router is set up , it doesnt need to have a PC physically connected to it. ( a lot of people like to do this as it saves running a phone line up the stairs or whatever ! )
