Wouldn't 75% be having 3 Irish grandparents? or is that what you meant by one parent & one grandparent?

How about finding out many people have celtic, norman, viking names? going back lets say 2-3 generations

Not Irish at all at all
All Irish people are mongrels - it's what comes of being an island nation.

    Father's surname, Irish / Mother's surname, Scottish

    Father's mother's surname, Irish / Mother's mother's surname, Norman (?)

My parents and grandparents and great grandparents, and probably before them for a few generations, were all born in Ireland, but their surnames quickly become foreign as you go back.

I've done the very start (ie. this generation, previous, previous, and some of before that) of a family tree, some day hopefully I'll finish it! It'd be cool to be able to give it to my kids and grandkids.

Yes, but I was thinking of my own family when I set the poll.
    I'm 50% my wife 100% & the children 75%
3 Grandparents would have looked better :o

No, its what happens when an island has a bunch of invasions and has a lot of trade ports.

Yes, but those are already covered, t'was intended for those who don't have a direct one two three grandparents ancestory!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

surely 'being irish' is a state of mind, rather than your ancestory for the last 2 generations?

after all, if you go back far enough, im sure most people here have english ancestory.
and most english people have norse or celtic ancestory, or god forbid even roman (or is that italian now?)

however, i have no irish blood at all in the last 2 generations, but i still hold an irish passport, spent 20 years of my life there, support the national teams, can sing the national anthem in irish, went to an irish school, was fluent in irish and have an irish accent.
i wonder, does that make me more irish than people who were born in ireland and know no irish?

personally, im of the opinion that if you feel irish, then why not.

If my ancient cousin drowned in the Corrib and her Da named a city after her, does that count?

You are related to Saint Francis!?! Cool! Always wondered how that city came to be named.:p

OP, I have no idea of "purity" of my heritage.:) My clan have lived in the same area of North Kerry for 3-4 generations, but who knows after that? Anyway, Irishness is just a mindset. I don't know how relevant Irishness is to me personally. I've got a thick accent, yes. Aaaand thats about it.:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,859 ✭✭✭bmaxi

How could you possibly quantify this? Are we going back to the Fir Bolg or was there somebody here before them? I personally feel it's the contribution you make to the country today that matters. Oh and I once had a pint of Guinness, does that count?

I think my mums side comes from the Normans.. apparently an ancestor was one of the first Normans to invade Ireland. Not sure about my Dad's family.

My dads parents and their side of the family are 100% Irish but on my mothers side there is a bit of Scottish in there somewhere but this is going back to my Grandads great great grandfather! It's hard to keep track!

So what does that percentage make me? Pretty much 100% Irish!

Damn my parents being Protestant though - if I was Catholic I would feel a lot more Irish.

Because it all comes down to the version of an imaginary supernatural being that you belive in really isn't it for defining ones nationality.

I consider myself English by nationality although the only patriotism I feel is in sport. Except when they do as dire as they did today..

100% back to the arrival of the Normans... and possibly even beyond, the lineage gets a little hazy if ya go further back in time!
May be related to Richard de Clare (Strongbow) but it's difficult to ascertain the veracity of such a familial myth when you're talking about descendancy over a period of almost 850 years

However, I myself was born in London, so my 'nationality' is best summer up by Morrisey; "Irish Blood, English Heart"
    :D

Well I was thinking of just looking at all 4 grandparents family names (or great grandparents if you can get that far).

For instance my fathers side is O'Connell (with his mother being a Gaynor), and my mothers side is O'Brien (with her mother being a Galvin), I think all are Gaelic except for Galvin (but then Im not sure about that either, Im just told we* all came from two brothers in the east of Ireland a few hundred years ago), I do know on my maternal grandmothers side there is some connection to the Fitzgeralds, but Im sure there must be more Norman names if I go back.

*Galvins I mean, the O'Connell side didn't even leave Kerry :D
