I am applying as a Broadcast Technician Trainee in the Audio and Music division of a broadcaster and they have this question in the application process:
Tell us about a piece of equipment with which you are familiar. Why is this equipment fit for purpose? What helps the equipment to work effectively?

What are they expecting here, as my experience is quite limited....

Well, if they are asking this question of people applying for a trainee poistion, I'm not sure they're asking specifically about a piece of professional broadcast equipment.

Perhaps you could talk about something like the TiVo remote (God's most perfect remote control ever) or those Beyer Dynamic headphones everyone in radio goes on about, your iPod, or perhaps even your mobile phone.

I don't want to steer you wrong here, but I think what they are really looking at is your ability to analyse and understand the technology around you.

You really should google around a bit. I wouldn't talk about any consumer electronics at all - try and keep it specific to a broadcast equipment. You could maybe talk about why non-linear editing is so wonderful (google Avid technologies), or how maybe how Betacam is still around these days, maybe chroma keys or maybe the differing standards for timecodes.

Best of luck with the job app.
