Problem with 3 3G datacard and laptop

I wasn't sure where this post belonged so I already posted in Laptops.
I bought a 3 datacard about 2 hours ago. It works fine on my laptop (Acer Aspire 5672WLMi) .... as long as the laptop is on battery power! If the laptop is on mains power it doesn't work at all. The shop says they've never heard of this before and that it sounds like a laptop problem. I am reluctant to return the card as I am getting great speeds (downloaded a 16.6MB file in under 2 mins). Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

    Nothing wrong with the card.
Have you any other cards you can try in the slot?
Take a look at your BIOS settings under power management,
and if you're not sure what they mean,
return them to "Default" values of some sort.

    Good luck with it,

p.s. Hold onto it for two weeks anyway.
If you do decide to give it back under the 14 day cooling off period,
you'll be charged up to half a months rental, but no hassle otherwise.
I gave mine back on the 14th day, and got a bill for about 15€.
Fine except I only ran it on speedtest.ie once in Dublin, and it
didn't work where I lived - 1.6MB traffic listed on the invoice.

Niallb, you are an absolute legend! I reset the power settings to their default values and now the card is working like a dream. Thanks a mill!
