Am heading to Beijing for a few days next month and was wondering what the situation would be like for bargains and gadgets. Anyone know of any items that I may pick up significantly cheaper there?

north face jacket for 15 dollars, golf clubs for next to feck all.external hard drives and memory cards for cameras are especially cheap. go to the "pearl Market" or there is a little market parallel to the "main shopping street" buy nothing in shops really , there isnt any need. oh , and long life batteries for the likes of camcorders are for buttons also. there is a computer market there where you can pick up all sorts of curios like gameboy advance game copiers and ds game copiers also.Gps units are cheap as well ( i got mine there 2 years ago for 40 euro and it's stil working perfect).
Laptops also as i recall and pdas.disappointingly at the time i failed to find cheap ipods which i thought were a banker.

Whatever you intend to buy always haggle! If the retail price is €50, offer half that and work from there, don't compromise and walk away if you have to as they always come running after you and sell for the price you want!

I too was in Beijing, beware of lots of fake goods. Like the other poster was saying, yes you can get North face jackets & golf clubs, but they are all fake. Hardware is cheap.

There are enormous markets - indoors & outdoors for electronics, I have an old email for directions:

Take the loop line (line 2) from Beijing Railway station to Xizhimen and change onto line no. 13. Go 3 stops to Wudaokou. The market closes around 5. Ask people out there about the electronics market at Wudaokou.

Make sure that you check all memory cards etc. I bought a 1GB SD card which was only 256MB. same goes with MP3 players. Bargain until they get angry and annoyed, then you know your getting the right price.
