PS2 not reading CD

Switched on my PS2 last night and without warning when I pressed the disc eject button, the door shot open really fast. Then I started to hear a slight whizzing/whirring sound from the unit while the disc holder was out.
I put the disc in and pressed the button to retract the disc holder and it wouldn't retract. So I had to press the reset button and then the PS2 rebooted, but started asking me for Language, Time Zone, etc.

Then as I went into Browzer, it would only see the memory card, no disc.

Anyone know if this is a common easy to fix problem that wouldn't cost more than replacing the unit. I would be competent enough to open it up and have a look inside to check if anything with the motor is wrong, but just wanted to see if anyone on here has come across it or knows of a site that could help me?

This happened to me a few years ago as well. One day without warning it started making whirring noises and wouldn't read my discs or read some of them but wouldn't go past the loading screen and making really weird sounds. Luckily the new slimline PS2 came out a few months earlier so I just bought that. Couldn't have been bothered getting it fixed.

went in their an hour ago to unplug it to have a look inside and when I switched it on to take out the cd that was in it, it ejected at the normal speed.

So I tested to see if it would read the cd and it did so I got an hour in....prob back to sqaure 1 tomorrow
