DIT Bolton St. Paintball Cup

DIT Bolton St. had their annual paintball cup on Wednesday 21st of Feb in Barrage Paintball. This was the first time they had a one day speedball event, and probably the first speedball tournament of it's kind in the south. There were only four teams taking part how ever in this seven man, center flag event. It was a league format, each team playing each other team three times. Each match was made up of two 7 minute games. Most games were over in three minutes. Only one of the games actually went the full 7 minutes with no flag hang.

It was a great day, the weather was perfect for a tournament, it was bright but not blinding and the wind was minimal. The paint on the day was RPS polar ice. There was only one or two problems with breaks all day I think in all the 40,000 odd paintballs or so that were shot.

Well done to the 'Fluffer's'. the orange team who won the competition. They will be one of the teams, or part of the team representing DIT at the IV's and will get to go on the paintball weekend away to Tralee for a lot cheaper.

This competition was a practice run for the 2007 IV's which we plan to run in the same venue. With improving the few problems that were encountered on the 21st, and adding in a few other bits and pieces, then the IV's promises to be a great Tournament.

How is Barrage Paintball as a venue? I only saw the field briefly through a rain soaked bus window.

The speedball venue is great, you cant do much to that apart from change the layout of the bunkers.

The woodsball part (the airsofting part also i think) needs work. There are two game zones currently being played on, which are still being developed.

    1. Capture the flag - Each team starts off in opposite forts, run out capture their flag and bring it back, or bring it to the opposition base, i cant remember.

    2. (same zone as above) Bomb mission. Team A are bad guys, and start off in a fort with multiple lives. Team B are dug in around their fort. They are not allowed into their fort bar one member who guards a bomb. Team A attack Team B. Once a Team B member gets hit, they fall back to behind their fort to take up position around a plane. One all first wave Team B are taken out, including the guy in the fort, Team A takes the Bomb and then attack Team B around the plane. Once Team B members at the plane are hit, they are gone from the game..........its simple really.

    3. Lower zone near the soon to be finished bridge. One team in trapped in a fort, can not get out. Other team basically fire at will at the fort to take out the team in side. This game needs work, its pretty much a firing range with not much cover for the team who are inside due to loads of holes i the walls.

Other than that, the facilities are great. Dressing rooms, showers, bar, restaurants, indoor karting for after. You could have a whole day out there!

I was very impressed by the facilities when I was up there. Wasn't expecting anything like that at all!

Unfortunately weather wise it was probably the worst day of the year. So we didn't get to have a look at any of the playing fields.

Is there much hard cover at all? I take it that it's speedy ball it's mostly inflatables. Although you did mention a bridge and some forts.

Cover on all games is 95% barrels and tires at the mo. They need a jcb in there for a day to make a few bunkers and trenches. They have great ideas for the place, its just a matter getting it all done.

The inflatables is only for the speedall yes. Only paintballers on that area. But airsoft and paintball will be allowed on all other areas as far as i know.
