What does the Panasonic 42" plasma model no. TH42PV60EY mean especially the last two letters EY.
    Anyone got an idea please.

    Regards

its a country/region code. so u can differentiate from the different types of set from around the world.

different countries have different specs tuner-wise etc..

check out the specs.. the tuners that work in ireland are PAL-I compatable tuners

yes it is. its a great set, difference between it and the th42pv600 is that the 600 has a nicer design (in my opinion), better sound, the SD card slot and picture in picture etc..

i used to have the pv60 but now i have the pv600 and to be honest i rarely use the "extra" features it has over the pv60.

panasonic are bringing out new screens soon enough. launching end of march, so should be available in may. they are going for the Pioneer design (piano black) and will be 1080p.

    Ok Big Moe,

I know you work in Alliance Electrical and it looks like you are official agents for Panasonic & Pioneer, so can you shed any light on the purple Snake issue on the 60 & 600 series of Panny Plasmas? It seems to be a major issue based on the threads on avforums, and it looks to be due to a design fault on the D Board. Have you had any issues with these sets? Can Alliance guarantee that if we bought a set that it wouldn't have these issues?
Also if you could comment on the Pioneer issues on the other thread that would be great.

    Thanks

    Snake (not Purple) ;)

as i said, i had the pv60 and i now have the pv600. personally i havent seen it on my set. as far as i am aware panasonic will replace the d board in most cases. as it isnt a batch that has the fault (as explained on avforums) we cannot know until we take them out of the box and turn them on if they have the problem.

of course if you experience this "purple snake" we will of course get it sorted. it is up to panasonic if they will replace the set or just the d board.

Maybe I haven't been paying attention but I haven't seen any complaints in relation to the problem in Ireland. There's certainly a huge post a bout them in av forums from the UK.

yeah maybe when they throw in the irish tuner it sorts the problem or something?? as i said, i havent seen it on either of my panasonics but maybe im just lucky!

Well Big Moe could you check with the powers that be if they replace the D board when they stick in the tuner? Also do the irish sets come in from the UK or Europe? I would have thought that it would be easier to get the sets in from Europe as they have the full spectrum of UHF & VHF.

It also sucks that Panasonic have not replaced the D board before they are sent out to the stores to sell, this sounds like tightness on Panasonics side as it looks like they supply a defective product and hope the owner doesn't have an issue.

Also have you tried a Xbox360 on your set? Some owners experience Green flashing on their sets.

Don't get me wrong, my main set is an 8 year old 100hz 32" CRT from Panasonic and it has served me well, A Panasonic plasma was high on my list for replacing my CRT, but the 60's are very plasticy looking and with the Purple snake issue, it looks like their build/design standard is slipping.

I got my panny TH 42 PV 60 just b4 Xmas 2006. Just started to show snakes. Contacted Panasonic uk 2 day. Still under warranty. Told me take set to repair shop..get d board..shud fix problem!!!! My big worry is that shop where i purchased TV is gone out of bussiness. Does board replacement fix snake problem???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭big_moe

    yes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,474 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

it fixes it ok, but apparantly creates another problem with picture quality and also causes a posterization effect, do the snakes really bother you that much? check out AVforums and read up on some of the comments around the issue http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=394430&page=368

Thanks for the words of advice....worried now in case PQ is affected...what is posterization?? I assume( I know thats a dangerous thing to do) that if the d board adversly affects PQ..then Panasonic will have to keep tweaking the tv till it works properly..ie give the customer what they payed for..or new set..it is still under warranty...Thanks again....

just to give u an example of posterization Tony, here it is applied to photos but the same applies to TV's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posterization
now I don't think the issue would be as bad as the photos shown here, but u get the idea.
Not sure about Panasonic engineers over here, I think Ireland is handled out of the UK, so think they might send the nearest dealer engineer to you. Big Moe might be able to advise as he works for one of the dealers.
How bad is the snake issue? Does it show up on DVD's cable? Sat? I'd sign up to AVforums if I were you, you might find some others in Ireland with the same issue, I'd stick a post in the link I gave u above.

Holy **** Batman!!!! That looks bad.....Took panny in today for board to AV here in Cork (PEOPLES REPUBLIC)...will know in abt a week if it works od not or if the dreaded posterization occurs! The snakes only appear in DVD. Thanks for your help...Appreciate it....Tony

Make sure your happy with the results Tony, you shouldn't have to stand for poorer picture quality when you get it back, i'd also make sure that the company you gave it into knows that you've done your research as there are a couple of different rev's of the board they will replace make sure its the latest, I'd read up on the board replacement on AV forums, find out what the latest is and ring the company to talk to the engineer and ask him what rev board they are putting in. That will make them think twice about putting an older rev board in.

Hi Snake, Thanks for that. Will ring AV Service in morning...to my knowledge i version 4.0 of the d board is the latest. They have to order it in from Panasonic UK. Trust me if PQ ibad I will look for new Tv. I will also ask for extension of warranty in case snakes return. Thanks for your help so far...Tony

Ok just to bring you up to date with my'Panny'. I think we may have a slight problem. As you know I got the d-board replaced abt a month ago. Since then I have noticed what I think is a deterioartion of PQ. While viewing T V in 'normal' mode as I always have the picture seems much brighter and not in a good way. Whites seem very bright and 'reflective' like the reflective strips on high visibility jackets. Peoples faces shine!!or even glow. Shiny foreheads and cheeks!! Its almost like viewing in 'dynamic' mode. I have tried changing colour options and brightness and contrast but still the same. Particularly evident on tv3. Plugged a cheap lcd ( BEKO) into same source and no such problem. If I switch to 'cinema' mode the pictures improves a lot, however you can still see the 'DAZ WHITE' affect tho not as bad. Any ideas? Tony

    Hi Tony,

No wouldn't be happy about that get back onto Panasonic about it, they might need to do some internal calibration via the engineering menu, but I think its more to do with the replacement board, it fixed fixed the Purple snakes issues but caused this new issue. Don't take any crap from them they need to provide you with a set that is fit for purpose, this set is not fit for purpose.

    Tony,

You might want to check this thread out over on AVforums, its basically the guys who got the replacement board and weather they are happy or unhappy with fix, some people have got new Plasma's off Panasonic due to the issue not being resolved. Hope this helps

Thanks for that Snake. Got onto Panasonic U K today. After much thought on their part they told me the problem was being caused by my SKY box. I then dropped the bomb-shell..I dont have SKY....CHORUS Digital Cable...and the reply was......well thats we think is causing the problem.Brilliant!!!!! I'll go back to the shop where I got TV in first place and see what they say..at the moment CHORUS are sending a Technician out on Friday to check their box...I'll see what he says and take it from there. Much appreciate your help Snake...Thanks....Tony

try and get something in writing to the effect that Chorus digital box is perfect no issue. Also can you take maybe digital photos of the issue and if you could take the same pictures with another TV as control? I would push to speak to a supervisor in Panasonic, sometimes you have to shout to get anywhere with these CS people. Also what about DVD's? Do they look ok or is it the same? One question I take it that your Chorus digital box output is set to RGB? I don't have the chorus service so not sure what the boxes are like. Key thing is if the DVD's have a similar effect?

I am in contact with supervisor at PANNY UK. Have tried other TV's..lcd and crt..no probs there...dvd's are fine. Problem only on PANNY. Told Supervisor this and she said that I was'nt comparing like with like as in lcd is different from plasma and crt the same. I told her that all logic would dictate that the PANNY had a problem. She would'nt agree with this. I'll wait and see what chorus say and also go back to maddens where I bought set. I left the supervisor in no doubt how I felt abt Panasonic and their total risregard for customers..particularly in Ireland as we no longer have Panny situated here. I have been dealing with same lady for the past while ..I even have her direct dial. I really appreciate your input...Thanks ...Tony
