So, today is the beginning of Lent.
I'm off the drink, not religious reasons, just de-toxin like. Last year it was sweets and sugar in tea/coffee.
Of course, Paddy's Day I will be drunk as a skunk :D Looking forward to it already.

It lasts until 7 April 2007, are you off anything?

I'm off drink. Mainly because I dared someone they couldn't give up drink for a month. When they did, we agreed that we'd both "do lent" and give up alcohol. I rarely drink anyway... should be a walk in the park.

    No, not giving up anything.

Tried to give up the drink for Lent a few years ago, but only lasted 3 days :o

Nope not giving up anything.. you should make a nothing option..

    Chocolate, sweets, crisps.

Already kicked the cigarettes a while back, and alcohol is slowly on its way out too.

I haven't given up chocolate since I was 16, so I'm curious to see if I can do it again.

Last year I wanted to do Ramadan, not eating or drinking during sun up - like a fast. In the end I didn't do it, too hungry I am.

abcork, you're right. Can a mod add a "Not giving up anything" option?

    I'm off chocolate.
I don't normally eat chocolate, so it should be fairly easy.
I was going to give up beer, but the lure of the off licence was too great.
I was also going to give up smoking, but I found some excuse not to. (yes, I am a great example for the forum I mod. :) ).

    Biko, I'll add that now.

Hmm. Boards is fairly quick tonight.
Would you like me to close the poll after 40 days?

    Giving up hope. And religion.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Why do people need 'lent' to give up something? Can you not just do it whenever you want.

I'm giving up drink as a detox thing.

It's the first time I've tried.

I hope I can stick to it.

Its meant to be a sacrifice to God since he fasted for Forty days and Forty nights in the desert before he died. Yeah you can give up things whenevr you want but as a Christian this is my personal Sacrifice to God before Easter.

Anyway Im giving up magazines cos I buy/read way too much of them.Am gonna find it tough not to get my weekly posh spice fix!

Giving up a magazine smacks of somebody desperate to give up something, but nothing they will find too challenging. No offence!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭kevmy

    Giving up drink.
Well I'm not actually starting until tomorrow cos I'm going out tonight. But from Friday till Paddy's Day staying sober. I'll pick it up again after that and do an extra couple of days at the end to make it up.
Been drinking a little to much the last couple of weeks and have an important few weeks coming up in college so it'll be good to give it 100% concentration.

So you're only giving up drink to be healthy and you're not giving it up for lent because it's inconvenient. Why dont you just go out and not drink...?

    You people puzzle me

Myself and my BF had fell into a routine of eating out at least 3 times a week.
2 of those costing in and around 20euro a head, and 1 of them being a full on 3 course meal, costing about 50-70euro each, including a bottle of wine/drinks.
We have decided to give up eating out,(barring special occasion's of course), for lent.
Not only will we save a fortune, we will hopefully lose a bit of weight too.

My father was a communist, trade unionist and a hater of the Catholic Church, yet he still always gave up the gargle for Lent.

Go figure! I think it's something deeply hypocritcal in our Celtic nature that makes up go off something for a set period of time, then hit it big time once the period of abtinance is up.

    Moderates we ain't.
