Planning a trip to cuba for end of august/beginning of september. I was wondering if anyone was there around that time and what the weather was like ie was there much rain?

Also any recommendations for hotels in varadero? Would like somewhere not too far from town that you could go out some evenings to different restaurants and bars rather than be stuck in your hotel all the time. is there much in varadero? Not looking for anything too mad, just a change of scenery really

    Any other tips/info is appreciated.

    Hi.

I was there in July and the temperature regularly went into the mid 40's Celsius. I'd imagine August is the same and September will be slightly cooler although you're heading towards rainy season then. But that wouldn't put me off. When it rains, it chucks down for maybe 30 mins to an hour and then dries very quickly. It can be extremely humid after the rain too.

In Varadero we stayed in Sandals, but most of the hotels are fine. Anyone we ever spoke to had no major complaints. Sandals is exclusively for couples, none of the others are. Of the ones we went to look around while there the Melia was nice.

To be honest, there's not a great deal in Varadero Town itself. There are a couple of restaurants, but we never went into town at night as we had 5 restaurants and 3 bars to choose from and were happy with them.

During the day, there's a great cafe/bar in the Parque Central, next to the lake. It's quite nice and they usually have live Son bands playing. There's a market in the town square too, which isn't really up to much, but the stall holders are happy to let you look at the stuff without the usual pressure to buy.

Try get onto a couple of the excursions. We chartered a fishing boat with another couple and went game fishing which was great fun. The price ($300 iirc) included drinks and a lobster lunch. The captain was a good laugh too.

Try get to Havana too. It's a real assault on the senses and it's well worth taking an overnight trip if you have the time.
