Christ, this is ridiculous. This is the 3rd time in a row, I'd go to bed, and just keep on waking up. It seems like I'm waking up on the hour, every hour... for no reason at all. It's freaky, and it's taking me ages to get to sleep in the first place.

I feel physcally ill right now. :(

I never have the keep waking up problem. Just the cant sleep for hours and hours....and hours.

Once I do though, its next to impossible for me to wake up. Slept for nearly 20 hours before...

It ****s up my life tbh, missed sooooo much school over the years as a result. Missing a load a collage aswell. Dunno wtf is going to happen when I have to work full time.

A lot of the time I just stay awake for 30 hours or so. Its hard though, almost painful.

Plus when I do this I seem to be very prone to getting sick. So more collage/life missed.

Doctor wont give me sleeping pills though, last time he said they dont even do them anymore...

I mean wtf were they invented for then?

You know, that's not a bad idea at all. I'm pretty awake right now, so I'll probably try it before I go to bed tonight, and hope things work out.

There's a pretty good sticky on the Sleeping and Dreaming forum under Rec you may wish to consult? Tips on insomnia?

    Come to the dark side.

I rarely have complete night sleep. Always wake up at least once or twice. When I moved over here my body clock went crazy. Started going to sleep at 4-5am and getting up sometime in after lunch.

Managed to get myself a part time job, but it is in a bar. Only work weekends and we lock up between 4:30am-6:30am :( So that isn't helping my sleep.

A few weeks ago I tried to take up going for a jog once a day to tire myself out. That worked for a week, has to be early in the morning or it gets too hot :D It is my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Now I'm using the swimming pool in my apartment block once a day for the same reason. Seems to be working so far.

    you worrying Karl? :(
Try lavender on your pillow & no tea/coffee and no heavy metal after 10pm... Chopin and a green tea!!! :D;)

I tried Natural Kalms a few months ago.. not sure if they worked to be honest but maybe worth a try?

Ken I had this last Sept for a month. I did my back in and it was taking forever to come right, so much so, I was worried about it and woke up every hour - 8 times in a night means fuk all sleep.
Worry will keep you awake. Your Ma is on your mind and this is the reason for your lack of sleep, I'm not surprised at all under the circumstances. Go to the doctor if it persists. When she's back on her feet and out of the hospital, you'll come right.
    Hope she's out soon.

    Karl,

could this have anything to do with the illness your mother is suffereing from, as illustrated in the previous post.

This is quite normal, especially when you are in the state of worry and shock.

    Don't worry bout it

Its probable related to your mum been unwell, and the stress and anxiety you felt. Now that your mum is on the mend, your body is relaxing but still on edge. Hit the weekend you ll probable have had a good nights sleep and feel a lot better for it. Just try and relax. :)

I get this kind of thing a lot, waking for no reason at 2 or 3, lying awake for hours, drifting off at about 6...then the alarm goes off 30 minutes later

It seems to cycle, for weeks I'm fine and then all of a sudden for two weeks I barely sleep.

It is usually to do with stress with me and sad as it sounds, I do find that if I meditate for a while before I go to sleep it helps a lot :)

Yes it is probably worry over your Mum that's keeping you awake :(
Don't watch the TV or listen to any music in your room for the next few nights, reserve that space solely for sleep. Avoid any stimulants in the afternoon and have a warm bath (not hot) before bed and a glass of warm milk. Also, you obviously didn't get to sleep until late this morning. Try and get up as early as you can the next morning so you will be exhausted by bed time the following evening. Sweet dreams.;)

I'm the exact same, I've gone 2-3 days without any sleep before at stages:eek:. The amount of college I've missed is unreal, because the times I do sleep, I sleep abotu 12-14 hours a night. Right now its 2 hours if I'm lucky, its taking me about 4 hours from going to bed to get to sleep every night recently.

I'm going to be so glad when I'm on my break from college and it doesn't matter if I sleep all day if I'm not sleeping at night. Just 2 more weeks to survive!

You should try rescue remedy. You can get it in any chemist and it is a natural remedy. Basically it stops all those stupid thopughts that go round and round in your head at night. But it will only work if taken occasionally. If you take it twice a night for a week it will start to become less potent (like anything). I suffer from insomnia and here are my tips I have used to control it over the years.

    1) Nothing but water after 7pm. This is crucial. Tea, Coffee, Green Tea and lots of other things contain caffeine. Green tea contains a lot less but its still there. Also dehydration will hamper sleep. Drink a couple of pints of water over the evening and make sure you are peeing white before you go to bed.

    2) Don't go to bed until you are ready to go to sleep. Don't watch tv, read a book, talk on phone, in bed. Bed is for sleeping. Conditioning.

    3) Dont do high octane stuff in the hour before you go to bed. I would classify these as playing poker, watching pacy movies, tv shows etc, reading a thriller or newspaper also counts as stuff you read can go around in your head. Turn off the TV and radio an hour before you go to bed.

    4) Spend 10 minutes stretching. Nothing fancy. Do it lying on ground if possible. It is AMAZING how much difference this makes. Dont have TV/Radio on when you do this. A stressed body gets very tight and hunched. This helps to release some of this. You should be able to find a 10 minute stretching routine on the interweb.

    5) Realise that worrying about things is natural but in most cases not helpful.

"give us Serenity to accept what cannot be changed,
Courage to change what should be changed,
and Wisdom to know the one from the other;"

In other words if it is outside your control let it go as much as possible. If it is something within your control deal with it. A close friend of mine once told me she was worried that she had nothing to worry about. I used to worry a lot as well but I realised that it was taking all my strength to worry and I had none left to live.

    6) If you are wide awake at night get up and and drink some water and do some stretching. Your idle mind is your worst enemy.

    7) Try and do some exercise if possible during the day.

I have found all of these to be good to help me sleep. Hopefully you can take some of them and make them your own. PS I am not some sort of bloody guru these are just things that I have tried over the years.
