    Hey all,

I'm know this has been asked before, but other than an extra 2MP and the anti-dust system, what's the difference? I'd love to get a dSLR, but the 400D is just that bit out of my price range...

    I'd appreciate any suggestions!

they are pretty much the sum of the differences. there's about €120-€200 in the price difference so it's up to you to decide if you can afford that much for a slightly newer camera technology.

personally, if i was very price conscious and trying to decide between the two, i'd get the 400D from the USA

USA price : €600 (if you manage to buy it and not pay irish customs/VAT
    Europe (Pixmania) - €800
    Ireland (Camera Centre) - €900

Have had a 350 for the past year or so, until it was 'taken' from me last week. Just upgraded to the 400D, which should arrive in the next day or so. Ive used the 400 before so I know what to expect. Buying the camera body only there is about €200 in the difference in a store and about €100-150 online.

Honestly though, I think there is very little difference and if I was starting out I would still go for the 350D, its a great camera. Im just upgrading because it was handy to and I wanted to help out the person who took my camera.

I'd go for the 350 and put the money you save towards a new lens!

All the best, either way you'll have a great camera and be very happy with it.

Asked myself the same question at the beginning of Jan and ended up going with a 350D with a 50mm prime lens and am very happy with it. If I were you I'd go for a 350D and use the money you save on buying additional lens. Once I have taught myself on this 350D I'll be getting ready for one of the bigger boys!!!

What does everyone think of the larger LCD on the 400D? I briefly held one and it seemed lovely compared to my 350. Apart from that, and as you say, those extra pixels (how often have I printed at A3 anyway, hmmm) I'm not sure if it's not better to save money on the body and use it for a better lens.

I was asking this question myself about 4/5months back. I was going for
the 350d and would have got that but in the end forked out for a 30d.
Also go into a camera shop and try out the feel of the camera, I've heard
a few people saying that the 400 feels a bit too small in their hands. Take
that into consideration, what works for you!

    Best of luck choosing.

I got the 400d along with a Tamron lens afew days ago., and i really like it. People say how small it is compared to other slr's and yes it is compact, but for me it is perfect (even though i got big hands..), because i'd prefer to carry this around if i was out hiking or something rather than a bigger heavier camera.
The lcd is great, the screen is bright and vibrant, and a nice size too.

I haven't used a 400D to comment properly on the screen, and I'd imagine the bigger screen is nice, but I prefer the 350D's small LCD secondary screen for displaying settings to rather large battery eating back lit display on the 400D.
I'm probably wrong since I haven't used one tho!

im in the same boat as the OP, really want to upgrade to DSLR and was thinking of stumping up the extra cash for the 400D. Ive done a good bit of reading on both cameras and the differences seem to be small enough (as stated above). But the good thing is that Im going to the states with work for a week at the end of March so ill try to pick it up while im over there. However Ill be staying in a hotel and probably wont have a car so I need to find a company that ships to hotels...any suggestions?

Seen the 400D with kit lens for about $750 in a few stores, and the 350D with lens comes in about $180 cheaper

If one was to get the 350D/400D body only what would be a good general use lens to start off with ?

I'm wondering that too tadhgrrr.... what's a good multi-purpose lens? that's unfortunately where my knowledge is lacking a bit :(

there's a good few general walkabout lens available but you'd really need to name your budget because that will be a determining factor on what you can get.

my fave is my Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM

but then it is expensive - costs more than either of the cameras your discussing!!

The Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens that 440 Hz has is a really nice lens that costs a lot less,
bear in mind tho that this is an EF-S lens which means that it's fine for certain cameras but not for all
    the EOS 300D, 350D, 400D, 20D, and 30D are all E-FS compatable i think.

On the intitial topic, I know have a one of each camera in front of me... this is tough!!! Uhhmmmmmmm if I was starting over I think I would go for the 350D and a nicer lens. I really like the 400D, so far, and very happy with it but there is so little difference between the two cameras, i barely noticed which one I was using... the lens is what is important at the end of the day.

Did a bit of an impluse buy today, I bought a 400D and traded in my 350D, The main reason was my 350D was playing up a bit recently and kept powering off and wont turn back on and the lights inside the viewfinder kept failing, I was chancing my arm and the guy in the shop barely even looked at my 350D and I just paid 180 euros (minus 7% tax back at the airport) and was handed a 400D body in its box, I nearly ran out of the shop, incase he realised it was dodgy, it was barely a year old, but has been carried around SE. Asia for the last 5 months, so the constant travelling and humidity must have gotten to it.

Might report back on what I think of the difference between the 350D and 400D are...... The 9-point AF is a big improvement though.

thats the problem, in the sense that im pretty much at the limit of my budget if i purchase either of the cameras, so i guess ill just have to stick with the kit lens for the moment

the kit lens really isn't as bad as people say. Granted it's not the best one, but for the simple fact that it comes with the body, it'd say it's worth getting...

    Bloody bargain!!!

I didnt get any nice deal like that... I 'gave away' my 350D and was 'helped'; to purchase the 400. Im very happy though. Havent had much chance to shoot lately cos my life has been unbelievably manically busy but the few chances I have had Ive been very impressed. Off to yet another gig tomorrow night so more chance to decide.

    so which is better value

canon 400D with 18-55mm kit lens for $714

    or

canon 350D with 18-55mm kit lens for $640

i guess for the sake of $70 i may as well get the newer model.
