    Hi

I have ordered a Freesat from Sky card and got it delivered to a Northern Ireland address.
I want to use it in the Republic of Ireland.
When i activate the card do i need to activate it from the box that i intend to use it on or can i activate it on any box and use it in a different box?

    Thanks for your help.

Once the card is activated it will work in any box.

    thanks kilasser.

Just to doublecheck, it is not linked to the northern telephone number or anything?

Once activated, and brought to the RoI, make sure NEVER to connect the phoneline to your Skybox when the FTV card is in.

The card doesn't need a phoneline connected to box to work.

What difference would it make, the card wouldn't be able to call sky as it would try and ring an internal Northern Ireland number, having said that FreeSat cards don't make call backs to sky anyway ?

I've thought this in the past too.

Though prevention is better than cure! :)

Hijacking this thread a bit but can anyone tell me if those freesat cards have to be used in a skybox or will any satellite receiver capable of taking a card work?

    Gahhh.....

ONLY for a Sky branded Digibox (Sky+, SkyHD included).

Swiss, Dutch etc cards of course WON'T work in a Sky Digibx

    Hi

Sorry for dragging through this again.

I've read the FTV sticky it explained a lot of things.
I have one extra question though.

If you activate the card on someone elses box in the north
and bring it down to the republic i understand that you will still
have CH4, Channel 5 etc. But do you lose the other channels that
    Freesat from Sky gives you?

Is it advisable to activate it from your box in the south where
the card is married to the box and recieve all of the channels?

Thanks for clearing this up and I promise never to mention FTV cards again :-)

    Kenny

You won't lose those channels, those channels are linked to the card, not the box. I'm not sure if you grasped this, if you want to watch Channel 5, you must have the Freesat card in your Sky box. If you want to watch Sky Sports 1 for example, you must stick in your Irish Sky sub card.

The card is better off being activated in a known UK Sky box, i.e. not one which has an Irish subscription married to it.

    Understood.

Freesat from Sky ONLY gives Sky3, Five, Five Live, Five US and C4. All other free channels are free free, they work even without a card at all. The Irish card hides some free channels, that still work via other channels or any of the methods that switch your Sky Box to UK EPG without a UK card.

    All,

If I want to activate a freesat card can I do so on a friends sky box that already has a freesat card.

Will this effect his card or box seeing that the box will show up in SKY with 2 freesat cards against it.

    His and Mine.

I will use my card in an old non-uk sky box that I have.

If I use a mobile phone bought in the UK but with an Irish SIM in it then can I still activate the Free Sat card without having a Sky digibox at all. I'm thinking along the lines of using the card on the NTL cable network for channel 5. Any ideas or would it be better just to stick with RTE! :D

Why can't you just stick the card into your own box? You can either ring them yourself (making sure that you have blocked your Caller ID!) or better still when card is in your box, give the details to your friend and get him to ring.

The only details he'd need woudl be card no, version no, and serial no. All got by pressing Services > 4 System Setup > 5 System Details.

I doubt if it's possible to activate a card that's not in a digibox. If it's not in a working box, it'll not receive the encryption keys to unblock the channels.

Are you saying that to put the freesat card in my Sky + box with Irish Sub and ring them giving my Sky+ box serial number.
Will this effect my current irish Sky+ box or card or will they say that this is an irish registered box and I cannot pair a UK freesat card to it.

I also have a irish Sky box on multiroom.

With my friends box the question was can I pair 2 freesat cards from different addresses in UK to one sky digital box taking one myself without effecting or cancelling any of the cards.

Maybe getting the card activated on your friends box then so. I don't think they cross reference the version/serial numbers.

I have successfully paired a UK card on my Irish box before, despite an active Irish subscription on it.

    Hi

Just to give you a bit of an update.
I went to my uncles house in northern ireland, took his card out and put my new freesat from sky card in and called the number - sky asked me to call out the card number - and insert the card.
At first i wasn't getting the correct message on the screen so the Sky guy got me to tell him the box make/model/system details - all was ok - so i took the card about - and put it back in again - this time it worked.

he said to leave it in and it would get activated in 2 hours.
i left it in over night and it was working perfectly in the morning.

i took the freesat card out - turned off box at wall for 30 seconds - put my uncles sky card back in and he was up and running again.

i then took my freesat from sky card down to westmeath and put it in my own sky box and it works perfectly.

    hope this helps.

    Thanks for the help.
