Second Life in DCU

Can anyone tell me how to get Second Life to connect when i'm using the LapLan 3.0 network in DCU.

I needed to kill some dead time today, but Second Life wouldn't connect.

And I'm sure i saw someone running it in college before - so i think there must be a way

Any help would (obviously) be very much appreciated

    Cheers

It seems to connect flawlessly through res, try going up to the Mezz and running it from there.

SecondLife wont work on Laplan whatever as the ports are not open and as far as I know res is the only location setup..

If you're having any issues with it just drop CSD a mail about. I know they had been working on getting it up and running but obviously it's not quite there yet.

Presumably they were meant to have it working in time for the virtual conference we got an email about last week...

Ah yes that e-mail was the first CSD heard of Second Life apart from getting it working on res.

Did that conference go ahead in the end?

i caught the end of that conference. it looked pretty crappy.
a lot of very new people bumping around the place and all talking at the same time.

there were some videos shown, but when i got there it was looping 5 mins of a video over and over

that said, i was late so i could have missed the good stuff

I've been using it too. Infact an email was sent around about a lecture that was being given by DCU and Trinity that was on in Second Life. But no one in DCU could access it..
    Irish students and educators,

Don't miss this event next Tues 27th February at 7pm.
    Location: Where you want.

It will be the first ever IRISH virtual conference. It will be held in
VIRTUAL Trinity College, Dublin in the 3D world of SECOND LIFE.
Many colleges worldwide are already conducting their classes in the
world including Harvard, Stanford, Edinburgh, Ohio, MIT, California..
    but to name a few.

The conference discussion will focus on the potential for education in
the virtual world of Second Life. It will include an introduction to
second life with video demos. It will be co-hosted in audio by a DCU
academic and Trinity College key speaker. Such events are held
worldwide everyday in second life - but this will be the first for
    IRELAND.

Has anyone been in contact with CSD about this I'm guessing not and if not who's responsable for second life here on campus. It it's a big change to the network someone will need to push to have it done like a school rep etc....

    Seb.

But wouldn't that not more of an incentive not to do any work in college!!(not that i'm being all geekish n stuff but its really terrible tbh!)we don't need another epidemic like that bebo again!!

A game like this should be blocked on campus tbh.

    Second life ain't a game.

Theres no point, no goal, no anything.

Its just an IM client crossed with a social networking site. With some character models tossed into a fairly basic 3d world thrown into the mix.

Anyway got word back from a CSD teck that the access still woks from res but that all at the moment as there is no real demand for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

That's a rather odd response. Usually in a case like this CSD will open up the ports for the service unless they happen to be known ports or be a potential security risks.

Your best bet is to ask around and try and get more people interested in using the game/site and then try CSD again. If they feel theres more interest then I'm sure they'll reconsider their decision.

    Bump for this.
Just went up to CSD about getting this working for a project a few of us are doing. The official response is that the helpdesk on the official SL website is excellent, but the solutions just arent working on the DCU network (ie changes made to the resident network didnt work when applyed to the labs). All the correct ports etc.. are open, but it just isn't working. Anyway, they said theyd let us know within the next few days if they get it up and running.
