Im about to order one of those ux2 gadgets, and was just looking at the KB37 - same dealy except with a keyboard..

Its just a midi keyboard yeah? Meaning i need a software sythesizer? Does one come with the line6 software? I have some sort of microsoft GS wavetable jobbie built into XP, but havent used it, dont know what its like...will that do? Just for strings and the like..

Yes the Keyboard attached to the KB-37 is just a midi controller so it will need a seperate sound source, like a softsynth. Afaik Line6 don't supply any but there are a wealth of synths available freely online, however they will require a host which aint free. A good inexpensive host which I cant recommend enough would be Cubase SE-3.

The only downside I can see with the KB-37 is that the keyboard isnt too big. Id rather spend a little more and get the UX-2 (or UX-1 if you dont need the phantom power, dual inputs, and hardware level monitoring) and this.

Ah its not for any serious recording, just noodling around the odd time (will probably use it once or twice and consign it to the back of the press with all the other junk I never use :D ), so I wont be buying any extra software at all, and dont need a bigger keyboard.

Dont really know what a host is TBH, i assumed i could just plug it in and away you go - does the ableton light or whatever it is that comes with it not do the same job?

Yeah, Ableton Live Lite is a host and a very good one at that. Being a "host" refers to being able to "host" plug-ins, in this case VSTi's like softsynths.

I didn't really look at the specs, but if this is basically a ux2 with a keyboard strapped on I'd certainly just go for the ux2 and buy a separate midi keyboard with the cash. 130 euro extra for a basic midi keyboard is scandalous.

I'd even go so far as to recommend you buy the UX2 and then some cheapo MIDI capable keyboard off eBay.

From your initial post it seems that the MIDI controller is just a kind of afterthought you had when you were looking for the UX2. You may never use it, you may end up loving it and wishing you had a bigger keyboard...

You'd probably even be better off buying the UX2 and this: http://www.thomann.de/ie/m-audio_keystation_49e_usbmidikeyboard.htm

€199 + €77 = €276 as opposed to €339 for the MIDI keyboard integrated into the KB37. Free shipping too from Thomann and 12 extra keys.

If you find you're not using the MIDI you can hop on adverts.ie or eBay and sell it. Can't sell off the MIDI portion of the KB37

Edit: By the way the Toneport is one of the best purchases you'll make this year :) I wouldn't leave home without mine (well, not technically... that'd just be weird)

Definitly get a cheapo MIDI contoller if you think you're interested though. You get a limited version of Abelton Live 4 (Lite) with the UX2. This should host your VSTs (I think) and you could use any free synth VST with it.

If you end up not liking it or just plain not using it then sell it on again.
