How to set up my own blog

Ok i've had a domain name and space sitting there for a few years now waiting to be used.

I run into quite a few problems in work while settings up various servers and networks and most of the support I come across is from other peoples blogs about their specific problems. I like helping out on tech sites where I can so i'm thinking I might set up a blog, where I can log what changes i'm making and what solutions I eventually reach.

Would wordpress serve this purpose? I want to be able to say set up different projects, then blog to each one individually as I make advancement in each. Then say have the latest log entries appear on the main page.

I'd also like to have this page for personal blogs and maybe picture hosting (maybe vlogs?) Can wordpress set up galleries and play videos? If not, if I uploaded videos to Youtube, could I play them through my blog site.

Further to this i'd probably like to have a forum area as well for one on one questions and general discussions. Is the vBulletin forums used by this site free?

Any helpful links and advice would be much appreciated. Even if you have your own blog site setup, link me to it so I can see how you went about setting up your blog. Let me know if there was any software that you find usefull.

The good products are not free.

Myself I use Wordpress and PHPBB fully customized and it works well.

There are a lot of plugins available for these and it is sometimes not easy to install, customize, but it is free. So we do not complain.

One non free good product I have used recently is SubDreamer, it offers forum integration, which is a nice feature. So your most recent posts from the forum (Like PHPBB or a few others) are actually appearing on the main page of your website. So visitors can catch up quickly.

It is reasonable tough, a bit less than 100 USD

can I ask mick.fr, did you design that blog page yourself or is that from a template.

could you name a few plugins that you can recommend?

If you go to fooljam.com yes it is based on a template
I just did some customizations but on the code itself, not the layout really.

Basically all the Wordpress plugins/features are here:
    http://wordpress.com/features/

I am pretty new to the blogging to be honest so I do not have any particular plugin to recommend.
I tried a few like Alexa and other traffic stats plugins but many of them are badly written, heavy to load etc...
So depending of what you want to know/have you can easily browse the list of the plugins, test them and implement them once you have found a good working version.
