On this page they state that they have plans from 7.99 per month yet their cheapest plan at the bottom of the page is 13.99.

    Go figure

    they are increasing their prices
so some old prices may still be around in some places
they are still the best value and have the biggest selection

They used to have a 6 week free trial using the code METRO.
Not sure if it still works or not.

they said a months free trial when I signed up 2 weeks ago but once I submitted my credit card details this has suddenly shrank to two weeks and they must have any dvd's back a couple of days before the 14 days so effectively your getting 1 dvd as a free trial. they're jacking the price up 40% as well.....

They say the reason for the price increase is the 12.5% increase in postage but that hardly equates to a 40% jump.
The price rises were announced in a "newsletter" mail which many customers would ignore.

" An Post has just announced at 12.5% increase in postage. Unfortunately, here at Moviestar we work extremely tight margins and as a result of this a new pricing structure will be introduced. This new pricing will come into effect on Monday 19th February 2007 for all new members joining up on or after that data."

At the moment I'm in two minds as to whether to continue renting from them. I'll probably work through my preference list and then stop using the service.

Yeah i got the same email newsletter today as well!
As it says its only the 1st/3rd i cant remember too much about it,

Except for the part where the price increase 12.5% im no good at maths trying to figure it out (anyone else is welcome to tell us)

As they've been very good at sending out the dvd's almost 4 a week on the 2dvd plan & a lot better than the other ScreamAtClick.com company :p .

Here is the rest of the message from the newsletter on the prices:
(bear in mind they're now only (€1 cheaper than the other one i mentioned!)
As you are a current member we will delay these new prices for an additional 4 weeks, therefore not taking effect until 19th March 2007.

We hope this increase will not deter you from our service, and feel that Moviestar is amazing value for money when compared to all our competitors, Moviestar will still be the cheapest place in Ireland to rent movies, and still offers you the widest selection of movies in Ireland.

    New price plans
MiniMove - €7.99 - Limited to 2 DVDs a month [ElNino is this the one you were looking for]
    Movie 1 - €13.99 - Unlimited, 1 at a time
    Movie 2 - €18.99 - Unlimited, 2 at a time
    Movie 3 - €26.99 - Unlimited, 3 at a time

I'll just try it out for a further while to see how it gets on!

You get a 4 week trial if you use "pigsback" as your promotional code. Brilliant! Love it.

Just received this email from them
We have made a change to our Terms and Conditions for Trial users and this is why I am writing to you.

Trial users can now only have 1 disk out at a time. This does not affect the Unlimited nature of our packages.

If you become a full member after your trial, the 1 disk at a time limit is removed.
They are cutting back in alot of areas, slowing down turnaround and increasing prices.

I'm going to be pulling my membership before my next payment period, €19 was reasonable but sticking it up to €27 is just crazy and not justified by increased mail prices.

They've got quite a large customer base now so they're moving out of the stage of attracting new customers, unfortunately they've moved to a stage of pushing current customers away...

Read this article by Kieron Wood from the Sunday Business Post of 28 July 2006 about the two brothers behind Moviestar and you won't be too surprised what they get up to.
