This has been seriously mooted ...any interest?

it would include three 20 minute track sessions, full safety and training facilities.....might cost €200 per car.....

A mate works there and apartently it's about 7 grand a day to rent the place.Open Track days really wouldn't suit classic owners with the amount of boy racers screaming around. I had a spin on the track recently (free);) in my Mustang and tbh it wouldn't appeal to me. The amount of abuse a car can go through on one lap when pushed just isn't worth it, and it's really no fun tiddleing around at a pace that won't abuse, may as well stick to the m50, it's cheaper. Then again, I may have limits about my car that other classic owners don't have, I suspose if you can fix your car yourself it may be different, I can't.

When I got the car I thought a lot about a track day, but now I think no.

I'd be quite scared that I'd make it go off the track and do real damage to it and me, or that I'd push it too hard and break something important. Plus (and this is just between us classic folks) I have a funny feeling that given forty years of car evolution we'd be quite dissapointed if we were put up against a Nissan almera or mazda 6. Shhhhh!

it's a great deal more than 7 grand for the day.....hence the need to try to find as many people as possible.....further news when available on www.everyfordireland.com

€200 for 60 minutes running is a rip off.

I've done open pit lane days in the UK (Bruntingthorpe Airfield) with a mixed bunch of cars, for STG£100.

€200 is very much a guess designed to put off the people who want to go for nothing....

cost of a day at Mondello is I believe €40,000

This sounds like a great idea, so long as all racers are similarly minded, i.e. dont damage the cars... I would be keen if only classic cars are on the track. €200 would be the max I would pay. How many laps would that offer?

40 grand seems about right if your hiring the track to run a superbike championship corky, I can assure you it's alot cheaper for a one off track morning or afternoon. As was said, you would get 3 or 4 runs of 3/4 laps, baring any crashes with the time it takes to clear the track, with that would include 4/5 marshals. It may be a bit more or less. The difference with a private hire and an open day is that you can limit the number you bring, obviously the more you bring the cheaper it will be but the less time you get on the track. I'll check with my mate up there on definate prices just to be sure if you want.I would hazard a guess that only week days would be available though.

the guy promoting the idea has already been in touch with Mondello.....

200 euro for 60 minutes is ridiculous, where did that price come from? 150 euro gets you 3.5 hours on the track at the open track days. Ok, so the cars are split into 3 groups for a good while, but theres usually an open session later on, when the numbers have thinned out a bit.
But, I wouldn't dismiss the 60 minutes idea completely, if the price was a little more reasonable, and theres a decent gap between the sessions.

gerry we're dealing here with classic cars, its a jolly rather than a thrash, most of need to plan and service the car to do a 60 minute cross country cruise, 60 mins of track time willbe plenty, especially considering the number of newbies....

3.5 hrs of track time - how many tyres/brakes do you get thru??!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,484 ✭✭✭Gerry

Right, should have made myself clear. I was only using it as a comparison, as I felt the price was a little high. 60 minutes is plenty of track time for a classic. I wouldn't feel like doing much more in my road car.
To answer your question, I have a newer bmw for thrashing round mondello. 2 hours was enough to reduce the front brake pads to bare metal, score the discs, and remove most of the tread from the tyres.

I have rented Mondello several times in the past. Its now about 8k for the international per half day and 5k for the national IIRC. A half day would be better as it does get tiring and the more miles you do the harder it is on the car.
Anyhow, apparently Mondello are booked out of weekend slots this year. I would expect a price reduction from those above if you took a weekday.

Contact Ian Beatty for more info but he may require the money up front.
You would also need 3rd party insurance.

As for duration, go out for 10-15 minutes and then take an equal length break - don't go out for 60 minutes on the trot.

    exactumundo

hey Gerry, I reckon we maybe having some classic (mk1 mini in my case) and BMW (e30 325sport in my case) crossover here :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,484 ✭✭✭Gerry

Heh, my cars are both relatively modern, the "classic" is a '91 saab 900, the bmw, a 93 e36 325i. I want to take the saab around the track once I've done a ****load of work on it.

my god man, we must be brothers, I had saabs for years before moving to BMs. Last car was a 91 LPT...lovely arent they!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

flat out road car could do a lap in about 2mins

A 993 Porshe 911 turbo in the hands of someone who could drive did a lap of long track in 2;06.....
Quickest I have done is 58.1 on short track in a F5 :D

Afaik, like has been said Mondello is pretty heavily booked this year on weekends.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

as i have already said the €200 was a guesimate.....obviously the more participants, the cheaper it will be....

(60 minute cross country drive needing planning and servicing? i regularly take my cars the length and bredth of Ireland and to the UK and experiance no problems that a modern car wouldnt...just back after a week in my 2.3 ghia auto...1000 miles plus...great time had...i think it's better to use them regularly if you can)

I have done several track days in my road car and whilst I can see what you mean, the only time people had 'offs' was when they were racing or doing some kind of messing.
I drove at a speed I felt that I was capable of driving safely (Im sure the car could have been driven much harder). I view my track sessions as ways of improving my driving skills.
In several hundred miles on Mondello tarmac I have never spun or caused damage to my car (leaving worn brake pads aside)

yes,,,thats my view too,,,id like to push my car and myself almost to the limit.....im not interested in competing or drifting....and im not so rich that I can afford to ruin tyres heedlessly, but it would be nice to "have a go" safe in the knowledge that a tractor isnt just around the next bend.
