Picasa is a good place to start

Bear in mind a good B&W conversion is not always that simple!
There's lots of good free image editing software from "the Gimp" www.thegimp.org
    to paint.net.
I'm sure you can even make an image greyscale in MS paint somehow.

Think you can change the attributes of the image in MS Paint alright, MS Photo Editor will do the same for you.

picasa is real easy , there is a b/w utility in Effects , or you can turn the saturation completly down -- i assume they both do the same thing !

You can do it here: http://snipshot.com/ without having to download any software to your PC. Jut go to the 'adjust' menu and move the saturation right down. I'm guessing we're not in photoshop territory here.
