NTL digital - old box, new box?

Just ordered a new dvd recorder and av receiver and in trying to figure out which cables to buy, discovered our digital cable box is outmoded - only one scart connection. Nothing else. Guy at RicherSounds.ie says I should call NTL and ask for the newer box: "You'd be well within your rights."

Guy at NTL confirms I have older equipment and says I can request the new box, but it will be €50. Can't say if it's a service or equipment charge. He can't even tell me what the different connectors are on the back of it. Just takes my mobile number and says someone will be in touch to arrange this. That was Monday. No one has called in five days.

My first question is: do you think this is a reasonable charge?

Second question: do you think it's worth it to be able to connect the digital box directly to the AV receiver, or would you just run a phono cable between the tv and receiver?

Connect TV to AV system. Plug all the boxes into AV system.

    Only one scart needed.

Thanks Watty. It's just an audio receiver, though, so presumably I can't feed the ntl into that then back into the tv - won't the video signal get lost?

Sorry if I'm being stupid. Whatever way this ends up coming together, it will still be less complex than the many tentacled beast that has evolved in my living room!

Ah.. I thought it was an AV (Audio + Video).

Does the DVD recorder have 2 scarts?

I have had 3 sat receivers, down to two in Living room, Game console, DVD player, PC TV out and S-VHS feeding Video Sender & TV.

I use a 4 way switch box that switches all the SCART wires and the S-VHS recorder can select 3 different devices directly without the switch box.

Also I have analogue 5 channel amp directly connecting to Sky Digibox, VHS, 2nd sat receiver and DVD player.

I know all about tentacled beasts in the living room.

The cereal box shelf in Kitchen has my Cable Modem, MIMO wiFi / ethernet router, Sky Digibox, Aerial Preamp PSU, ethernet swich/hub, 2nd phone and most of the sat / TV distribution cables. I think I need to fit patch panels.

The small NTL Pace digibox (still standard I believe) has 2x scart sockets & 2x audio outs (including optical). See attached.

Ok - so I'm really dense. It is an AV receiver. Finally took it out of the box.

I've gotten NTL to agree to replace the box for free. I called up and told them that it keeps resetting itself - which is true. So I get a new one, but apparently have to wait until the end of March.

My current box definitely just has the one scart.

ISTR NTL supplying some sort of scart lead that was a "Y" adapter, it had one scart plug on one end & two leads from that, each with a scart plug.

I assume you were meant to plug one into the VCR & the other into the TV.
I think the VCR could then play via the NTL box to the TV (not 100% sure - was a few years ago) or at least that seems like what they were trying to do.
