Pedestrians

    Hi All

I'm jusy wondering if there is any action I can take as a pedestrian to get car users to stop parking on the footpaths?

This really annoys me as I some times have to go around them onto the road and this can be dangerous, given the level of traffic and also I can get wet as have to jump puddles on the curb side etc. I would be grand on the footpath only I dont want to walk over the cars.

Sometimes, there are people sitting in the cars and I ask them to move but as you can imagine from the typical car user in this country, its not exactly effective. (ok typical may not be right but .....)

Whats the law on parking on footpaths etc?

    Thanks for the help

Its illegal... however where it is legal to parl your car on the road, car drivers do not want to block traffic so they park up on the path so there is room to get by.

However usually there is enough room for pedestrians. Where are you talking about? Is it a tiny footpath in Kilkenny or some other Medieval town?

    Fair enough then it illegal

I'd much perfer if the cars stayed on the road, even if they are blocking it, i dont have much sympathy for car users really and dont really care if they are stuck in traffic. Plus if there is not room to park and drive on the road then surely parking should be illegal (double yellows etc)

Sometimes, when I have to walk on the road to avoid these drivers, I'll open the passenger side door to ask them to move, and then forget to close it.

My estate in Dublin 15, with normal enough footpaths, pedestrians (e.g. parents and kids) are often unable to use the path because of cars parked there (often when there is space in their own driveway or in a parking bay nearby).

My suggestion - report it to the local Garda station - do it regularly. Put the station's phone number in your mobile. Reporting it via TrafficWatch (1890-205-805) is another option - the report will be faxed to the local Garda station. Contact your local (county) councillor. Make noise.

Phone the clampers, or even better, a tow truck.

if there isnt enough room to park on the road , then it is illegal to park there as they would be causing an obstruction, it is also illegal to park on the paths....phone the Gards....

Interesting that this topic came up. For the last several days there's been a taxi parked on the footpath outside my apartment every morning. It's parked between the wall and a tree meaning only the slimmest of individuals can get past on the footpath. I've tried twice and ended up catching his wing mirror firmly on both occasions ;)

So who should I approach first - Gardai, TrafficWatch or the Taxi Regulator?

I've just looked outside and the fooker is parked there again!

Regulator only deals with operational matters of a taxi, try the other two.

Would the gards or clampers actually do anything about it?
How many times have i've seen a garda car just cruise right on by without even a moments hesitation.
I've seen stretches of 50 cars all with two wheels up on the footpath, maybe allowing room for a pedestrian but not a pram.
Has anybody ever had a gard take action in these scenarios?
