Atkins diet with weight lifting

    Afternoon everybody,

    A friend of mine in work is going on the Atkins diet for about the 6th time in the last 3-4 years, but this time he's joining a gym to help him gain fitness as well as lose weight faster using a combination of weights and cardio.

    I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any studies done on this, how bad an idea is it, or does it work?

    My own opinion on it is that it won't work, and will probably do more damage than good. The lack of carbs in his system means that the majority of the protein he takes in will be used on energy, rather than building muscle, correct?

    tell your friend to keep the weights and drop the atkins,

    seriously how many times does he have to do a diet before he realises it isn't a long term solution to his weight problem

    I will happily sit here and say that your mate trying to do anything overly active whily ketogenic will make his life hell.

    As JSB said, tell him to drop Atkins, eat properly and go to the gym.

    Personally I think that Atkins is a bad idea full stop, but I'd like to have something to back my argument up with. On the other hand, for every study I've seen that the Atkins (or any fad diet for that matter) is a bad idea, there's always at least one other to show that it has benefits.

    Been checking around on this for a bit and there's no real studies on this. Not surprusing really, the Atkins diet is only really popular in recent years and wasn't at its peak long enough to do any sort of long term study on it.
    What the general consensus seems to be is that cutting carbs out of your diet while weight training will limit its effectiveness, without carbs your system will not have the energy to work out effectively, and the protein in your system that would have gone on muscle building is instead used for energy. You will lose weight, but it'll be muscle mass rather than fat.
