    Hi
need to make a side gate this week.
Have a welder and a bit of experience so here's the questions.

Will built a frame (like a figure 8 ) and then put three 6mm plate on top, middle and bottom so I can screw on some timber from behind.

Any tips on size of box to use -- 32mm/40mm
Is one support in the centre enough??
what size plate to use 6mm.
what hinges to use - to keep as close to wall as possible>?

    any other tips

    thx

ps-saw new gate sin argos catalogue - no thanks. :D

not fully sure what you're at here but for a 3 wide by six tall side gate 25mm box will be more than enough. 6mm plate will also be well strong. any chance of a pic or diagram of some sort?

    hi Johnboy

a basic frame like this -with out the decorative bar -pic here .

I will need to weld a piece of plate at the top, middle and bottom.
I will have holes drilled into this plate and screw on the timber from behind.

hope this is a bit clearer.

so 25mm box & 6mm plate should be fine ?
3 wide * 6 tall is about right.

    thx

yeah it'll be fine, only thing is can you weld ok on light stuff like that? is it mig or arc? if its arc get some thinner rods and you'll be grand.

why do you have to use the plate at all? why not screw through the box and all, simpler and quicker to make, plus it will require a bit more skill to weld the box to the plate as the plate will be twice the thickness of the box

will have a look and see whats its like to drill the 25mm box.

might even double up on the center piece to weld the draw bolt to it.

    thx

will have a look and see whats its like to drill the 25mm box.

use Oil lubrication when drilling and a good sharp drill bit and all will be fine .... :)

you dont need a flat to fix to. You can get nice brass finish self tappers and tap direct into the box section. 6ftx3ft I would put a diagonal brace in, run it from the bottom hinged corner to the opposite top.
Hinges, depends what you are hinging off. Usually use pin hinges for side flaps on truck bodys, easy enough to pick up. Finish it off by putting fake plate hinges on the front of the gate with cup head bolts to give it a rivet look.

the hinges will hopefully be bolted to a concrete wall.
a motorbike has to pass the gate so have to save space as much as possible.

    thx lads
