Readings - why?

Ok seeing how the Psychics & Mediums thread seems to be the most popular (at times) thread on this forum it has me wondering - why get a reading?

I have gotten one in the past and though it was insightful the reason I got it done was pure curiosity.

One of the things I worry about it that for some people it seems to be addictive?

So why do you get readings?

I dont want this to get all defensive with replies questioning things I do, this is purely about why people get readings.

To open the mind, receive information, find solutions from a different perspective, to ask questions, to find relief, to gain closure and grieve, to learn, to talk, to hope.

Anything can become a crutch (I think a slightly more suitable word rather than addiction) as readings can.

i think that some people just want to know that their loved ones have passed over and are happy.I have gone once after my sister died and found that it did help, but you have to go with an open mind and a belief that there is more in this universe than we will ever understand.

I have never gone to a medium, never felt the need and I have never had a purely physic reading done.

I have had tarot readings done, either by friends or complete strangers.
Usually for the same reasons to either look for conformation of something or to see if there is a way to warngle out of something.
When your own reading , a friends reading and complete strangers turn out roughly the same it is hard to fault what is ahead.

See there is a difference between visiting a 'medium' for a consultation (trying to contact someone) and going for a 'reading'. What I am talking about are the people who go to tarot readers, fortune tellers, angel card readers etc., NOT MEDIUMS. I can understand someone going looking to know that someone is ok but i cant understand those who go a few times a year just to see how their life is going or what might be coming up.

This is not an attack on people who do this, I just love not knowing how things will go, I believe I affect my fture every second of everyday and just want some insight into the minds of those that choose to spend €50 a pop to find out what 'might' happen.

i have to admit to becoming addicted to them.....

before i got my first done i was of the opinion that id never get a reading as id be too afraid of what he/she might say......but the last year has been a b@stard & i feel good after talking to a pyschic.......its like lifting a weight off my shoulders, even though what the ones i trust told me wasnt want i wanted to hear.....lately though ive found things in the particular situation seemed to have changed & the predictions are good....so ill have to wait & see.....i really do have to stop though......

Thanks for being so honest celtic, you really showed me what I was thinking.

Being that you havent been getting them too long do you think that it 'could' an unhealthy dependancy?

yep... it is at this stage.....its just, when you hear things on the grapevine as it where & the f@uckin eejit that tells you doesnt really now what the true situation is, just hears snippets in passing, its very frustrating so talking to a stranger with a gift is a great alternative to have to gain clarity & a true vision....i feel & am happy that they arent 100% correct though as this leaves the option of "chance" there but once the main "noose" is right im happy enough.....my situation seemed dead & buried a couple of months ago but a reading i got recently has shed a fair amount of hope & it seems that things are goin to work out afterall or at least ill have a choice to make....now, if i havnt have consulted a reader then id be none the wiser & probably still be severely depressed so they have been a good thing BUT if the predictions dont happen there is always a chance i could fall back into the rut.....either way i have to give up on them....& if my situation improves im goin to revert back to the "not knowing" theory as id hate to know the future then...

So does anyone think that it might be used when councilling or talking to family would probably be the best way to go?

i gained an element of closure & now hope from readings....talking to my family or anyone else wouldnt have provided me with either so imho no but you'd want to be consulting a decent reader & not just any sham....

I do think readings in general are to be used once in a while. No more than 3 in a year. I think I've had two. and the last one was about 2 years ago.
If you need to talk to someone who understands your grief past one or two readings I would suggest counselling or something along those lines.....maybe some energy healing etc. I think when the grief is shared within the family sometimes it can be too raw to discuss it properly and engaging a 'stranger' whether it be a psychic, healer, counsellor or a friend is preferable.

    Yep.
I know of people who are cousellors that use it as a tool tbh.
Given the range of hurtful and painful stuf that can come up when doing a reading good people should a list of contact numbers to pass on.
In days past people woudl go to thier priest/minister for confession and help
and you do get a lot of people turning to esp Tarot/angle card readers for a spiritual connection.

The few time I've gone was after a break up. I suppost I wanted to hear something positive:confused:

Like Firefly the first time I ever went was after a bad break up. I just wanted someone to tell me good things were going to happen and didn't mind paying for it. I didn't expect her predictions to be so accurate. I've never had such an amazingly accurate reading, even from the same person, since then. The specifics were astounding! I wonder was it something to do with my vulnerability at the time that left me more "open" for her to read?

With hindsight she actually did act as a counsellor in a way but it was just what I needed at the time.

I haven't been much since then... maybe 3 times in 9 years and more out of curiosity than anything... to see if anyone can predict so accurately again and it hasn't happened... but there again I'm happy with my lot just now and don't particularly want any changes so there probably isn't much to predict!

people get readings because they hope for a good news and they want to get rid of bad ones just incase there is.

Have you had any readings done mhh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,633 ✭✭✭stormkeeper

While readings do tend to help many people, there's also the matter of knowing how to separate the genuine people from the scam artists. Of course, you can't always tell when this is the case without getting screwed over yourself.

Of course, this said, you have con artists in many professions.

This isnt about the readers (the psychic & mediums thread is there for that) this is about those that get the readings.

Andy, you've gotten readings right? Well in each case what motivated you to get the readings?

It seems bad times, be it money, work or relationships send people to get readings.

This is true, though there is also the issue that people who get a bad reading may not get it again, if that makes sense? I was trying to compare giving a reading to any other service that was provided, though admittedly, I don't think I did a good job this time round!

Well, generally, I get readings as a matter of curiousity, though obviously I do want to see what the person has to say. I think in my case then it generally amounts to curiousity, rather than any one issue, though I did ask if I'd get into UEL. I tend not to get too many readings, mind... though I will take advantage of an opportunity if it presents itself, like Edinburgh for instance (as you know). I generally haven't had any reason to get a reading, other than just a general overview of things. I do like to see what they can pick up, mind.

Of course, some readings are really not worth the money you spent on, others you get your money's worth, or more.

This does tend to be the case alright. I think a lot of the time, this seems to be close to a last resort to some people as they have practically have tried everything. In some cases, it's people's first port of call, though it's these people who are most at risk from getting too dependant on readings. Additionally, I feel that getting too many readings would perhaps mess up your karma, though more realistically, you'll fall into the pattern of not being able to make a decision without having to refer to someone to provide a reading, which can put a massive strain on your wallet, and ends up being an irony in itself, especially of some of the readings are financial concerns.

But to summarise... provided you're not overly dependant on them, getting a reading can be a nice way of putting things into perspective, from both another point of view, and another way of doing things. This in turn helps you to view things in a different light.

I used to get readings maybe once a year just to see what was coming up. I have had good readings (in the sense of good things happening) and readings were the fore seeable future was bleak and heart breaking and both sides of the readings have come true and I suppose my aim going was curiousity. Now strange enough I dont see the need to go.

i have to admit to getting hooked on them recently....& ive now, finally, drawn a line & wont be getting another one done for a long time.....i think it was a case of getting a "bad" one done & then a "good" one....both had that same slant on things but different outcomes & that influenced me to try & find which one to "believe"......so i experimented a couple more times & those people have predicted "good" & all have predicted the same timeframes..."freaky" eh?? so from people valued experience on here is it "good" or "bad" to come for moi?? prolly impossible to answer??

I've had 2 tarot card readings done.

Both times I just went with a group of friends for the laugh. The first one was quite accurate in terms of telling me things about what I was doing at that point in my life and in what direction my career would go based on the fact that I was doing a course at college that wasn't naturally talented at. But also indicated that this was not a given & my own choices would play a part in the outcome.

The second one was really bad & didn't tell me anything useful so has kind of put me off wasting money in the future.

I think most people go to them when they are feeling vulnerable and are looking for some hope and due to this fact and the potential state of mind of some of the people who do use them, yes I do think they could be addictive. Going through a bad patch myself last year I did consider going back to the first guy but decided I'd be best to wait until I could sort through things on my own a bit first.

I've had one reading done. They had a guy come into our work and we could get a reading for €25. Anyhoos I never had it done before and was curious since you always hear stories about them so I decided to see what it was like. Some of stuff he told me was spot on - especially about my personality and some other stuff he told me would happen in the next 6 months has happened - other stuff hasn't happened yet. He told me a good few times I had a talent I wasn't using like he wanted me to say what it was or something but I haven't figured out what it is. He asked me was there anything I'd like him to look for in the cards but i couldn't think of anything (I think I was probably thrown off by how accurate some of the things he'd said were) so I think I probably would get it done again and maybe have some things I'd like to ask them to look for or even just to see if somebody else would say the same things :D

    Hi there,
I am new here so be gentle! I am hoping to find a genuine medium as I would like to make contact with someone....any help would be appreciated.;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

Hi Maddison, there is a thread at the top of this forum with reviews of lots of mediums & readers. Phone numbers are not posted on the forum but if you find a medium you like the look of I'm sure someone can get you a number.

Personally if I was you i'd contact the house of astrology on Parliment St, Dublin and see if June is taking appointments.

I've lost count at the number of readings i had. I went usually when i had stuff going on in my life or wanted to see what was ahead (mostly about love stuff :o )

I dont think i was ever truly impressed with anyone though and not much came true so far.

Most people i went to were word of mouth recommendations but i've yet to meet a true psychic imho.
