J1 forms

    Hi all,

    Planning on doing an unpaid internship for 6 weeks in the US this Summer. I need a J1 for this. I've been through all the information on the Dublin US embassy site and I'm still wondering so I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has the answer.

    It seems I have to apply with D 156 and D 157 forms, available on the website. However it also says;

    "J Visa (for Exchange Visitors): A completed Form DS-2019 must match exactly the name in your passport. Proof that the SEVIS fee has been paid is also required. Provide documentary evidence of funds to cover all expenses (e.g., a bank statement). "

    Where can I get a DS 2019 form (says they're not available online) and what is a SEVIS fee and how do I pay it??:confused:

    Thanks for any help!

    Not sure about those forms and things I'm afraid, but wouldn't it be easier to get your J1 through USIT or SAYIT?

    Yeah, I think that's what I'm going to do. It's just that I'm out of the country and will be until the Summer so I thought if there was a way I could do it without going through an agency I would.

    Thanks for the reply

    You'll need to be here for your embassy visit at least when getting the J1 afaik.

    You sure you need a visa? If your work is unpaid you may not need Social Security Number etc., and we're allowed up to 90 days in US on Visa waiver program, maybe email the embassy and ask them?

    Will do, thanks for the advice.

    DS-2019 is issued by your sponsoring organisation in the u.s., such as council of international exchanges who usit use http://www.cipusa.org/. You need a sponsoring organisation such as them, you don't necessarily need to go through usit to get sponsorship.

    You do need a work visa such as a J-1 even if the work you are doing is unpaid.

    You apply for your J1 in the country you are resident in at the time of applyin so people who go to college in Scotland or england but live in ireland apply there and their embassy interview would be done there also. If thats not the case for you, you are able to apply for j1 (with usit anyway) online. But as someone said above i reckon your best bet is to get onto the embassy, i had a problem with my interview and I have to say i was very surprised at how helpful they were.
