Laptop Modem Issue

I bought a Toshiba laptop last October and I think it's a superb piece of machinery. However there is one problem with it. I'm in an area where broadband isn't available yet ( ) and I’m forced to use dialup.

The laptop I have (Toshiba Equium) has what I believe is a modem/soundcard combination. Often when I’m using the Internet any media I’m playing (movie, music etc) stalls and won't play again. This also causes the Internet to partially freeze, sometimes disconnect.

I cant get a reaction out of it until I disconnect and force the modem to reconnect and that sorts it out for a short while. I was wondering would anyone have a solution as to why this happens?
    Also the modem in question:

Check Sound and Audio Devices under Control Panel. What is listed as the default playback device under the Audio tab there?

Also, I would suggest the old favourite of updating the drivers.
