it's so I can use a CF card in place of a hard drive in a PC for firewall or what have you

even better if it can match with a 2.5" so I could use it in a very old laptop
which would then have no moving parts
The drive side interfaces specification for IDE drives is very similar to that for CF cards, so "rolling your own" (bit of soldering) is easy. However, for €8 (see other posts), why bother.

Seems like a great idea, boot from CF into RamDisk, don't write to the CF again until there's a config change = diskless quiet PC/Router/Firewall.

    Excellent idea!

What about logs? They're written to all the time, aren't they?

Anyone know of a SCSI CF adaptor... I need one for an old piece of kit that doesn't have IDE. In fact, any memory card format would do. I just need it :)

Yeah, these should be written to RamDisk, then copied to CF if the machine is shutting down, if they are needed. Trick is to do everything in RamDisk, else CF will be ruined in a few weeks.

Should all be do-able, probably distros out there for this already.
Linux is very adaptable, souce availability mean folks modify it for projects like this all the time.

I've seen a SCSI to IDE adapter, guess one of those + http://cgi.ebay.ie/NEW-Dual-Compact-...QQcmdZViewItem might do the job.

Sorry, can't find a link for a SCSI to IDE, they did exist, I saw one attached to a 3.5" laptop drive, worked OK, just like a normal SCSI drive.
