What are the figures of males and females entering the nursing profession in Ireland?

  • my girlfriend started general nursing in UCD this year. Of a class of 250+ there is less than 15 males..

Sorry for not knowing figures, but this can show the percentage differences, its still a completely female dominated profession.

An Bord Altranais doesn't appear to keep statistics on new students starting training but on the register there were 63327 female compared to 2826 male nurses registered in 2005, the most recent statistics available.

I spend quite a bit of time with student nursing classes in Ireland and I would guess it's certainly less than 10 %. Apparently, from talking to nurses trained in other EU states, this is quite unusual.

its not actually, some countries have larger figures of men in the profesion but by and large across Europe its still a very much female oriented profession.

from the people who started with me, we have about 3 lads left out of a class of about 60
