    Hi Guys
I started doing BJJ back in September and was jus wondering how safe is a rear naked choke as in if u were in a self defence situation is it safe to choke someone out? As in theres very little chance of god forbid any permanent damage being done? Just something i always wondered about!

If you trawl back through some threads someone posted a good article about fatalities from Police arrests using choke holds etc. Basically the evidence there was all from arrests made by cops of violent criminals, if a guy is on crack, pcp, heroine etc. and you choke him, he might die.

...in a self defence situation is it safe...

in a violent confrontation nothing is 'safe'. however safe as compared to using a weapon, KO'ing, maiming etc then its probably the safest and most humane option.

    most humane option.

I believe a violent attacker/s, who has decided upon himself to hurt/injury/robb/kill you... humane treatment (with boundaries of law), is last thing they deserve.

However, I know we differ in ideas on that already. ;)

As far as i know, the rnc is actually quite safe because (when done right) it is a blood choke and when you let go the blood pressure build up is enough to send the blood back into the brain. You would have to hold it on an unconcious assailant for about 2 minutes to actually cause damage to them.
(from what i can remember, instances where police have killed people have involved the police using the batons to finish the choke, which gives a much higher chance of crushing the larynx than your arm)

From my limited knowledge of the cardiovascular system I think the choke is safe enough.

I think what the choke does in most cases is activate whats called the Carotid Sinus, the brains blood pressure regulator. Pressure on this causes the body to think theres a high pressure surge going towards the brain and so the heart slows down, eventually to a stop if the choke is held long enough.

Also, there's plenty of blood flow to the brain through secondary vessels even if both carotid arteries are suppressed. Apparently during some neck surgeries, surgeons clamp both arteries shut so they can work on them while the patient remains fully conscious:eek:

That's just what I can remember about the blood vessels in your neck, I wouldn't rely on it too much until you can get a doctor's opinion on it.
