    Hi,

At the start of the year various Euro coinsets are introduced. This year the irish set was priced at €22 approx. Do these sets appreciate in value or are they just a novelty?

    thank you, jim

well,...... coins are difficult to assess. the thing is , how many sets are going to be issued ? - how rare they will be ?

and the other thing is the current value compared with the future value of the coin. i mean ,.... 10 euro today may get you 10 loaves of bread,.... in ten years 10 euro may get you 5 loaves of bread.

as an example : ancient roman coins can be bought for small amounts of money,... and i often find that buying a silver denarius today can be cheaper than their "old value" as such. a denarius is a 4 gram slug of silver struck with a portrait, and looks very precious.

i dont know a lot about coins or notes,... but thats my line of thinking.

They are not a good investment at 22 Euro trust me, I buy and sell Irish quite a bit. By all means buy a set for yourself but don't expect to make anything on them. The only Irish Euro annual set that shot up in value was the 2002 because it was the first year and had a high demand in Europe. Apart from the annual sets, the only other Irish Euros to shoot up in value were the 2006 Proof 8 coin sets.

I also collect Roman silver Denari and Antoniniani.

my investigations in the last view days are leading me to the same conclusion. i have noticed though that Vatican, Monaco and San Marino coin sets have appreciated tremendously in value at least for the 2002 editions.

Do you think that the more recent additions from the above mentioned principalities should appreciate well also?

It depends what you pay for them. If you are paying current market (ebay) values for them then the answer is no. If you get them directly from their respective central banks at their official release value then yes.

The coins of the 3 states above have not actually appreciated in value since 2002, they have actually dropped quite a lot since then. Let's take for example the San Marino 2002 set. When they first came out they could be got from thier mint at around 20 euro (or thereabouts) but immediately sold out and rose to 200 euro. But since then they have dropped gradually to around 100 euro. Remember everyone was going mad for them at the start because thats all you could get at the time was obviously the 2002's. But as the years went by and more and more sets were released the prices dropped. Not everyone is fussy about having the first year but they had no choice in 2002. You can now pick up a 2006 set on ebay for around 40 or 50 euro. So if you get these from the mint at 25 euro that's fine but don't expect them to rise from 50 euro.

I'm afraid not, I'm only familiar with and collect AD roman coins as the earlier stuff is just too expensive. I had never heard of Vercingetorix and figured he wasn't an emperor or it would have rung a bell. Apparently he's a romantic idealism of a Celtic warrior appearing on coins minted by Hostilius Saserna in 48 BC. You should search under this moneyer's name instead.

I may as well mention it on this thread too that theres a big coin fair on at the RDS this weekend. Theres a few dealers there that sell Roman and some of those specialize in them.
