Tamron vs Sigma

Budget Tamron and Sigma 70-300mm Nikon f-mount lenses - is one better than the other?

I posted a thread about my plans to buy a Nikon D50 in New York next week along with some cheap lenses (I am on a budget). B&H are offering a kit of two Tamrons - the aforementioned 70-300 and a 28-80, all for $209 here.

I can't actually source a Nikon 18-55mm lens (the kit one that comes with the D50 - D50 is being sold body only, or with more expensive lenses in NY now) in New York, so this would suit me. The loss of some of the wide end with the 28-80 doesn't bother me much, but I know nothing about the quality of these third-party lenses. I don't expect miracles for that price, but would like some opinions on quality.

    Thanks folks :)

Tamron use plastic mounts on their lenses ,that seems to be the only problem people have with them.
    Sounds a bit cheap

A bit? Dirt cheap I would say! :) Which is what I'm thinking - no great loss if it is pants anyway. I've read reviews of the 70-300 one which are quite positive, but can't find much on the 28-80.
