Status of Irish citizenship - Drafted?

I'm a German and Irish citizen, and I have been drafted by the Germany Army. I would like to know if I will lose my Irish citizenship for carrying out my German military service. I am also considering a career in the German Army after I have completed my basic military service.

Under German law, if I was drafted by another countries army, I wouldn't lose my German citizenship, but if I volunteered to serve beyond the basic military service, I would lose it. There's a tradition of Irish soldiers serving in foreign armies, so I was hoping that the Irish rules are more lax, but I can't find the relevant information on the internet.

Best bet is to ring the Irish embassy in Germany(Berlin I assume). They`ll probably be able to give you an answer.
Failing that go to www.irishmilitaryonline.com and ask in the forums there.

AFAIK there is no prohibition on an Irish Citizen serving in any foreign army especially where there is dual citizenship involved and the army is that of the alternate citizenship.

Lots of Irishmen have served in the British Army with no problems.

However if a state of war arose between the two states, Ireland and Germany, I think you could be tried for treason if captured. Unlikely, but don't say you weren't warned.

OT There is no prohibition on posters linking to IrishMilitaryOnLine.
The Forum itself won't offer a permanent link to that site persuant to their request. It's in the Charter.
