indeed seeing as ITV requested that ITV4 be taken off satellite. dont think that you will be seeing it soon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭mjsmyth

Why would they have to request it be taken off? Why don't they just do it?

I have to say I would miss ITV 4 though.

because ITV dont run the Sky EPG?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Not to rain on anyones excitement, but the Irish Times reports that it is for NTL Digital customers only. And not that people should mind all that much, but it is apparently going to be British Eurosport and not Eurosport International English.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭mjsmyth

You lost me there Mossy. Surely if ITV own ITV4, it is up to them whether it broadcasts on satellite or not. As you say, Sky own the EPG, but not the channel.

Can you explain a bit more?

    Thanks,
    mj

    ok

ITV4 is still available on satellite, but needs to be tuned into the Sky Digibox 'Other Channels'
ITV4 however is not on the Sky EPG as ITV asked Sky to remove it

Is it really worthy of an article in the Irish Times though? Hardly not.

Probably just UPC trying to get any sort of positive press considering all the recent news and adverts about Sky / Channel 4 / Channel 6.

That's bad news for us Chorus people if they're going to harmonise all the analogue services in the country and it means they're going to drop Eurosport on it everywhere - hell we even get Eurosport on analogue MMDS :D

What is the difference exactly? We get the International one on Chorus analogue here, though I think it may be British Eurosport on Chorus digital MMDS IIRC.

minor differences between the two. Brisitsh Eurosport for example may have a UEFA Cup match that International Eurosport wont have and vice versa

Its 423 on my epg, there is womens tennis on it now.

Just saw it myself. So much for the old days when NTL told Marian Finnucane there was no demand for it (after it was pulled).

I don't see all the analogue services ever been harmonised - Chorus is the product of mergers between many, many different companies and the analogue layouts are still very different on each. NTL doesn't even have a standard analogue layout between its regions, which have been under common control for nearly 21 years and were only formed of a merger of five different companies.

Remember that in most cases in Ireland, reordering the analogue service means every individual customer having to manually retune the TV.

FFS how long did it take to get one of them? :D

Comercial pressure on spectrum to fit more broadband (with phone service) and more digital channels will see reduction of analogue to a very small 5 Irish TV plus maybe 4 UK TV. If even as much as 9 channels.

Analogue MMDS is going completly. There isn't the spectrum to do it and have a decent digital service.

No picture here only the EPG details. I'd sooner British Eurosport than the 'pan european' version. So I can watch Chelsea in the UEFA cup next season.
    ;)

Decies, thats probably just the box software playing up again. Mine has required a couple of restarts in the past few days. Quality stuff. Press help, and Yellow and it will do a restart and missing channels should reappear.

As per Watty's comment above - the bloke next door (who works for Chorus or what ever they're called now) says that analogue MMDS is to be phased over the coming (in Cork at least - can't speak of elsewhere). He says customers will get letter advising them of impending upgrade to digital box.

Might be a consequence of the UPC takeover.

They're downsizing in terms of installers as well. Not clear if that means they have alot less new customers these days or whether they plan to outsource that side of the business.

Yeah I was thinking that too - just wondering if anyone heard any different.

That's already starting to happen here - BBC Two and Eurosport were moved off Band I to make room for broadband and put on some Hyperband channels instead - I'm pretty sure at least one of those replaced another channel. Some of the encrypted analogue channels have gone too, and nothing has replaced Chorus Sports so far (we just get a blank screen with Live 95 FM playing).

Yes ALL of BandI needed for Broadband return channel.

What frequency does it use for data going the other way?

Thanks simon thats always the first thing i do help and yellow, then if that does not work unplug followed by how far i can throw the box!!!!!!

eurosport blank screen here in galway. epg working though!

What frequency does it use for data going the other way?

Multiple channels (as many as needed)
200kHz to 8MHz, I think can be set as channel width.
Channels can be set anywhere from 5MHz to 68MHz.

    Sequence:
After Modem boot the modem either goes to downstream (incomming or download or receive) frequency previously specified or auto scans from 108MHz to 860MHz looking for DOCSIS channel. When it finds one information tells it what channel and mode to transmit on.

Then the Modem "ranges". The Head end CMTS measures returned signals and finally tells modem what frequency to RX (listen/downstream) and TX (upstream, talk) and what power, modulation scheme and bandwidth to use.

It can then load new firmware.
Then DHCP process occurs to establish the data connection.
If there is builtin SIP / Packet VOIP, it usually gets a different IP inaccessible to Internet and does SIP server registration next.

Various techniques are used to prevent people connecting their own modems to the network or changing the coax network settings.

It's all really very clever, designed to work on rubbish upgraded analogue cable networks (every downstream Tap/amplifier has to be replaced with one with two diplex filters to allow 5MHz to 68MHz upstream return).

So broadband can't co-exist with any broadcast on cable below about 76 to 87MHz. Some networks don't allow Band II so as to have cheaper Diplex filters for 108..860 Downstream and 5..68MHz upstream.
