I already have a set of York cast iron dumbells and I now want to get a bar with some extra weights but the ones I'm looking at are vinyl weights (also York) and I'm just wondering are bars a standard diameter across the board?

    There all from Argos.

Yeah they fit, but they aren't great and well deteriorate over time. The bars for the vinyl ones are usually hollow so are not rated to high weights. Also the vinyl weights are thicker so you can only get so many on a dumbell or bar.
I started with the iron york dumbells. Then got the hollow tricep and ez curl bar, €20 for the 2 as a set. Then I got 4x5kg iron plates and 4x10kg iron plates and a 6ft solid bar. I think the hollow bars were rated to 40 or 60kg max, I have had 140kg on the 6ft bar.

Those vinyl bars are death-traps. Much better off springing for the solid bar it will last you much much longer.
