Channel 4 dont have the rights to show it on satellite in Ireland

blocking Everybody Loves Raymond is a good thing though

    Thats strange??
Are there any other programmes that are affected?
I have never seen that with any other channel.

Thats happening alot to me too. I flicked on to Friends during breakfast a few days ago and got a "This Programme is not Available" message.

Oh, and everybody does NOT LIKE Raymond.
    Had to be said.

It's all about broadcasting rights in other jurisdictions, nothing strange about it, you'll also see similar messages on ITV2+1 and ITV3+1 on certain Movies and programmes from time to time, get used to it, I suspect it's the future of Television.

    Thanks Peneau

How can sky justify their new advertising campaign of channel 4, trying to sign up new customers or steal them away from NTL on the basis that they "now have channel 4", when half the programmes are scrambled.
    This cant be right.
I know someone who changed over from NTL recently because Sky now have channel 4, what if he is going to miss some of his favourite programmes. Did sky tell people this?
Regarding ITV2 and ITV3, I thought that we were not legally supposed to have these channels anyway so why would they stop only some programmes.

    half the programmes?
can you list them please. from your post you have only seen one programme blocked. seems to be mainly American crap that's affected

the ITV2 and 3 situation is not specific to Ireland, viewers in the UK get the message too simply because ITV dont have the rights to show some programmes on their +1 channels

American repeats, certainly. Fraiser is definitely one that is. I've seen one film (some Mel Gibson fayre iirc) blocked. It was mentioned here at the time.

The ITV2+1 and 3+1 situation is really weird, its down to the contracts that ITV have with the distributors limited to the amount of times the programme can be shown!

The only legal restriction is that if a channel is encrypted you must use a valid viewing card (or correct subscription if Pay TV).

Sometimes Program content providers put contractural conditions on Broadcasters. These are Civil contracts between the two companies, their is no legal obligation for viewers and some of these contracts may actually contravene EU law. But who has the millions in legal fees and the will to challenge the system?

All C4 is encrypted. Try taking out the card :) It is neither hard nor illegal to have UK £21 Free To View/Freesat from Sky card for C4, Five, Five US, Five Live.

The C4 situation may change next year.

The whole "rights" issue may change soon too.

Friends, everybody loves raymond, frasier ,several movies....
maybe it is just american crap but that doesnt make it ok especially if they are saying "hey look at us now , we have Channel 4, come and subscribe to us!!!!!"

What I don't get though is why C4 has to block programming that's also licenced to RTE while E4 etc don't.

    What's the deal?

    That was a pointless reply!

I woiuld imagine the problem lies in the rights negotiations for each channel being different, what with E4 being a pay-tv channel, and C4 primarily not a PayTV channel (except here of course). C4 probably hadn't allowed for coverage into Ireland for some rights, but had foreseen this on E4 as they wanted it available in Ireland at the time.

AFAIK, I think the rights negotiations may differ for each channel, even though they're both owned by the one company. Maybe somebody can clarify this?

Add the new series of "The Sopranos" to the list. I suspect a lot of people will consider that quite a loss...

i'd imagine most of those who watch the Sopranos have seen this series already on RTÉ Two or have downloaded it

or have already watched it on e4 when it was on last year and not blocked to irish subscribers. funny that they can show it on e4. must be as previously said that c4 dont have the terrestrial rights to ireland and rte have it or c6.
