Wasn't sure where to post this.

I am considering contacting a professional hypnotherapist
to help me erase the memories and minimise the damaging personal effects
of a recent serious relationship breakdown,

Can anyone reccommend someone to contact or perhaps share
some of your experiences with hypnosis treatment particularly in the
    area of relationship help.
    I would appreciate any replies.
I am worried that unless I get help I won't be able to move on
    with my life.
    thanks.

I think this would be better suited to Personal Issues.
After Hours is not the type of place you want to be asking questions about relationships and such.

PI mods, feel free to move this back, but I really don't think it belongs here.

That aside, hypnotherapy has been discredited as a load of crap. You'd be better off seeking real help, either from family or friends or start going to a therapist.

Please back up your arguments with links, papers or a decent argument.

To the OP I would look into talk therapy first. If you work perhaps your company has an EAP where you could seek free anonymous counselling.

I'm currently in hypnotherapy, for problems in my past that is having a knock on effect in my current life, can't say it has any noticeable effects, tho, every person is diffrent, and it has different effects.

I'd seek a counsellor first, myself i've been through them all, consellors, pysycotheripsts. Found consellors the best and cheapest.

Keep the chin up and remember tomorrow is another day:)

Good lord jasus god help you!

I have had hypnotherapy and it worked brilliantly for me.
I suffered severly from agrophobia, fear of open spaces which led to panic attacks on trains in cars meetings anywhere i felt it would be socially unacceptable to leave. Had it for 7 years, tried medication, cognitive behaviour therapy which had no effect.

Went to hypnotherapy and after the first seesion walk out and on to a bus.
Since then I moved to dublin started driving and beyond.
It really does depend on the problem but if you do go they will not help you forget anything merely help you move on which is much better.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for that but when you say 'knock on effects' it seems to mean you mean in a negative way? Is this true? can you elaborate perhaps?
Im wondering why you are persisting with the hypnosis if it's not working?
    thanks

Thank you for replying. (and to everyone else)
For the record I've been doing some research and on other various forums, mostly uk ones I have found that the overall verdict on hypnotherapy is a positive one, people seem to have had some great results by getting this treatment, so I hope it can also work for me.

The Goose > Glad to hear you had positive results.
May I ask did you just do a 'yellow pages' to find a hypnotherapist
or did someone recommend it to you?
Was it expensive and how many sessions did you need?
    thanks

of a recent serious relationship breakdown,

I'm not an expert in this field but I have had some very difficult issues to deal with over the last few years that lead me to question everything about myself and re-evaluate my life.

I tried hypnotheray and drugs (prescribed!) and ultimately it wasn't until I sought professional counselling that things started to move in the right direction and now things are more or less back on track after five years.

So personally I would reccomend counselling and can reccomend one if required.

Whatever you decide I wish you the best of luck.

OP, I think start with your GP recommending a local councellor, which might help you through the break-up.

I doubt hypnotherapy is going to help you "just like that".

Pretty sure he meant that the problems in the past are having a knock on effect in his current life.

Dont want to go into this too much but my parents had a nasty separation, and i was always in the firing line, and i have a ''If my childhood had of been diffrent i wouldnt be the way i am'' attude, and its holding me back doing things in my current life.

Going for my last session tonite, she said do the prescribed course so i'm gonna give it one last whack.

I'll let you know how i get on.

    Thanks for above replies everyone.

Victor, I have serious doubts that hypnotherapists can 'outdo' the work of a councillor but as I said above
after some admittedly quick research it seems from my findings that
that is exactly what hypnotherapy has to offer a more immediate type of
    help.
I guess there's only one way to find out, I guess I'm desperate and I don't feel like going to session after session of talking about my problems even though I realise that's exactly what might be needed, I'm going to suss it out anyway and I'll write back about my experiences (thats if I remember to :) )

    thanks for replying guys.

This is strongly reminding me of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".

OP, hypnotherapy is more to help you overcome irrational fears or addictions. It's not designed to 'make the pain go away'. If you think about it, if you're scared of spiders, that's a single element, one fear, one problem. You could have a myriad of post-relationship issues to work through, and as has already been said, time and counselling could be a better idea than trying to be hypnotised out of your misery.
