Using ebay to earn a little

I know everyone thinks that they can do this etc, but does anyone actually do it and make a little bit of profit out of it? And how do you go about it, did you start by selling the odd thing from home and then looked further afield?

Am interested to see if many people try and earn by doing this.

    Thanks.

Buy lots of stuff in bulk when cheap. Sell it for a little more on eBay.

Buy it anywhere you can at a price which allows you to see it for a profit.

eBay proberly isn't the best bet, you'd basically be an ebay reseller ... which can't be a great way to make profits :)

Who knows .. check the Fairyhouse market if it's still going?

I tried it about a month ago, i made US$164 in the space of about 1.5 weeks...
all that just selling 3 items that I no longer wanted/forgotten I had..

Its hard work, listing, watching, waiting, waiting for payment, then finding suitable packaging and posting the item..

If I had more stuff to sell i'd be doing it..

For some stuff, its easier to sell locally in the BUY & SELL etc

Its all about assessing whats on ebay, and if someone else has an item identical to yours, but for less, dont bother posting up your item, it wont sell..

The trick for selling is, 1 photo, wait until ebay do the low listing cost days, like 20 cent to list an item, it'll save you money, dont have a reserve price but do have a starting price, and i'd recommend 7 day auctions, starting on a thursday night, as late as you can, 12midnight or later..

As for making a living on it, it would be hard in Ireland, as we are geographically isolated, and if an American sees the same item in their own country, they will buy it over yours..
oh, and always list on ebay.com, ebay.ie is rubbish!:)

I'm registered with ebay.ie though. When I list an item does it automatically go up on ebay.ie or can I change that?

As for the 7 day auction, why not 10 days if you're not in a rush for payment?

Do an advanced search by region and see what other Irish-based sellers are flogging. Last I looked, a lot of it was 'genuine' Limerick lace (that's Limerick in the Philippines, right?), Guinness bar mats, sets of genuine Oirish Euro coins, diddly-aye compilation CDs, artistic photos of Galway Bay, souvenirs of Knock, that kind of sh1te. Cheap to buy here, cheap to post to the States. ;)

I reckon it's a lotta hard work. Unless you find a reliable wholesale supplier of small, light, high-value electronic consumables — high-capacity memory cards or something like that? I recently bought a job lot of five 1Gb xD cards and flogged on the other four at a price which made my own one free... :)

Remember I saw someone from Mayo selling 6 pack o hunky dory's for like 10 euro. Was tempted to buy them as I'm living abroad. You could try pushing the whole stuff for irish people living abroad.

Sorry i meant its better to do a 10 day auction, starting as late as possible on a thursday night, because it covers 2 sundays, and finishes on the 2nd sunday.
Sunday evening is the busiest time on ebay.com.

I'm not sure about changing from ebay.ie to .com..
Try logging into ebay.com and then list your item, it should be listed on .com then.

What are the advantages of listing on .co.uk/.com? Won't the item be viewed at regardless or am I missing something here?

Thanks for the replies so far, interesting stuff. Regarding the wholesaler, won't it be difficult for an individual rather than a business?

Another advantage of selling on ebay.co.uk is the exchange rate is in your favour and makes your price look cheaper.
