I had a 120Y I bought for £60 when I was an apprentice, did the clutch and it went for 2 years, a great car except for the rust, it had no driprail so on a wet day you got soaked.

Anyone notice a few strange things about the 120Y on carzone? First of all a 120Y is not a Cherry, it's a Sunny. Secondly, the B210 120Y ceased prodution in 1977 AFAIK so it is strange to see one with a 1979 reg. Thirdly, if it is a 1979 car then it does require an NCT despite the seller saying it doesn't.

Good observations. If you notice there is no tax or insurance disks in the window either. The car was probably recently imported. The owner may have been mistaken about the whole NCT thing.

As for the year, the car may not have been registered untill 1979.

In any case I also like old 70s Datsuns like the B210 and B310, Bluebirds, Laurels etc. Also Toyotas, Mazdas. TBH I'd prefer a seventies Japanese car than many "proper" classics like MGBs and the like etc.

I was watching a tape of the Dublin Village programme that was made by RTE in 1988 and reshown in recent years. A great programme for spotting seventies cars in everyday use in 1988 Dublin :) This being Ireland there are load of Datsuns, Toyotas and Mazdas to be seen. While I'm at it, do any Mk1 Mazda 323s survive here? Used to be loads of them about but none now. The model I'm talking about is a RWD car with chrome bumpers and round headlights with facelifted cars having square lights.

I saw a mk1 Mazda 323 the other day just cant put my finger on where exactly i saw it think it was driving down the cannal near dolphins barn.

And was so surprised to see it. That’s one thing I love being from a 3rd world country you see all these classic cars still in daily operation un restored. Having said that some of them should not be allowed to go on the road but its still a runner :D

one common one used in South Africa is the Datsun Stanza (I’m not sure what it may have been called here since we have different names for some old cars back home) but a pic of it can be seen here http://www.dragtimes.com/images/5832-1980-Datsun-Stanza.jpg

also the mk 1 mazda 323 is a pretty common car as well and the mk2 (mazda sting) which was still available to buy brand new until a year or 2 ago then there is the old golf MK1 which we still sell brand new in SA but its called the Citi Golf now there has been some modifications to the body and interior but still looks 97% the same and up until 2005 you could still buy the 1.3 carb
    engine

you could also buy this brand new till mid last year when they finally replaced it with the Yaris http://www.wheels24.co.za/Images/Photos/20060710190458tazz.bmp

    sorry for going off topic

I think this car was known as the Violet here. The lights and trim on the SA Stanza look different to the Violet but the basic body shape looks the same.

The Datsun/Nissan Stanza that we got here was a later model which came in a hatch or saloon. Had big plastic bumpers and a round front (bit like a Renault 18)

I haven't seen a Stanza like this in many years. And I can't find a pic of one on the web either!
