I've just bought a larger hard drive for my macbook and have no problem installing it. my question is, seeing as i am new to macs, what is the best way to transfer all my files and settings from one hard drive to another?

I'm thinking of getting an enclosure for my old hard drive and use that to transfer my files across and then use it for storage after that. but is there an easier way of doing it osing OSX?

An external enclosure is probably your best bet, unless you have another external drive or computer that you can temporarily store your files on before transferring them over. You could also just burn everything on to dvds.

You got it right the first time -- get a 2.5" SATA enclosure & download Carbon Copy Cloner.
    Now,
    1. Put the new (larger) HDD into the enclosure.
    2. Plug the enclosure into your Macbook.
    3. Format the new HDD with Disk Utility into the HFS+ format.
    4. Use CCC to backup your old (smaller) HDD to the larger one.
    5. Once done, turn off the machine & unplug the enclosure. Swap the HDDs in the enclosure & your Macbook.
    6. Turn on your machine & you should be done!
Assuming that went fine, you can now plug in your enclosure with the old HDD & use it for backups/storage.
