Okay, well, I was down at Glendalough yesterday (left the house anticipating some lovely misty pictures but the sun went and cleared it all off within half an hour, dammit...) and as the sun set behind the mountains at glendalough it got nice and hazy, and I took a couple of shots of the ruin on the hillside with the hazy trees behind it. I started to work it up in my lunch hour there and think it has a lot of potential – I was just looking for any suggestions on what to do with it – like which areas to brighten or darken, white balance, saturation, sharpening, any of the above…

It’s a half decent raw file, nothing is blown out although the shadow areas are a tad murky because of the haze. I tried a bit of “shadow/highlight” already to bring up the dark areas and it worked rather well, although I didn’t push it too much. This one also has a desaturated layer with ‘overlay’ blend mode, some quick dodge/burn on the brick wall, a curves layer masked for the trees on the hill behind to bring them out a bit, and some USM for local contrast on selective areas.

I can attach some originals at different raw settings for blending if anyone fancies a shot at it.

Hmm the trees in the background make me think of somewhere much more exotic than Glendalough.

I actually find the ruin distracting me more than anything else, but I love the rest of the picture.

I have looked at this by moving it up the screen so that is is a rectangular shot with no sky. The sky is the big issue with me. Unless you want to go heavy and burn the bejazus out of the sky it seems too bright and distracting. I'd be inclined to try an horizontal crop, from what I see it would definitely work. If you want to send a copy of the RAW file to the address on my moo card (that mail has no limit size) I'll have a go at destroying it this evening.

    Thanks, Magic :)

Valentia, ask and ye shall receive...

I might have another go and try to bring down the sky some more, I'm not sure how much of that I can get away with and have it still looking (almost!) natural. I don't know if I have the resolution there to manage a crop - I'd love to get a print out of this if i can.

Gandalf, the ruin is kind of central, not sure if I could do anything about that one ;) Funny you should say that about the one picture I have that doesn't just have trees in it...!

Nice shot elven. It almost looks like a painting, when I first saw the photo it reminded me of a battlescene :)
