Im looking to be able to scan in paragraphs from a book or two into my computer and have them entered as text rather than having to type them all out. I was wondering if anyone out there has a lower end (ok cheap) multifunction printer and has used the packaged OCR software with success for similar operations?

Just make sure you get the OCR software with the scanner. Cheapies work quite well.
