Got Broadband At Last! wirelessconnect.eu

At last! Having given up all hope of eircon sorry eircom, ever enabling our "exchange" in Crinkle outside Birr, I have managed to get it wireless from www.wirelessconnect.eu

For anyone in the Borrisokane-Cloughjordan-Ballingarry-Shinrone-Birr areas and maybe others I thought Id inform you. Go to the website for details.

They appear to be a small company run by 2 guys, one of them Michael Cotter from Borrisokane. He came to me Friday and installed it. Its a small squar-ish dish, about 8-10 in square. he has a mast on Knockshegowna hill, but has 2 masts elsewhere also so check it out if youre in the area.

Installation fee has just doubled to €200 (but i just got it for €100 !) and the basic package is 35.99 a month. Its 1gig d load. I know nothing about speeds and get confused by kilobits and kilobytes...all I can tell you is right now it says
speed 48Mbps, though mostly its 54. Cant say i see any difference between the speeds, to me its excellent, very fast, web pages almosy instant.

So far I thoroughly recommend them, he was a really nice fellow and did a good job.

That 48 Mbps is just the speed of your LAN, which is many times faster than your actual broadband connection. Go here and post your results.

That may not give you accurate results. The chances that smaller ISP's like this are connected via Inex is quite slim (Unless thay take backhaul from an existing member ISP). So you may well see poor results on these test sites (located in Ireland). You may see better results to UK based sites.

These test sites are useful in testing the speed between the user and just that particular speed test server. This is not the same thing as the actual line speed and while useful should not be taken as an exact result.

Is it just me or is that website design rather odd? Maybe its just IE only or something.

They don't seem to have coverage maps either.

Also your service is 1Mbps if your on the cheaper home package (no download limit mentioned that I can see) with 30:1 contention ratio.

Don't know exactly what they mean by burst speed but I'm sure someone here does.

No i dont see maps either, but essentially its a "local" service, and most people within 10-12km would know Knockshegowna Hill. The thing is, from the top you can see 7 counties! I climbed it many times, an excellent place for a mast as everywhere around is flat!

Yes I thought 30:1 was better for the price than a lot of the others.

I'll do the anyway later, and let you know.

OK for what its worth the speeds came up as

    Download 1.13Mbps

    Upload 514 kbps

Of course i understand nothing about that! My icon in the tray just says speed 48.0 Mbps...thats a huge difference. I can only compare it to a friend with Lastmile whos speed said 10Mbps.

Well according to that test you're getting what you paid for, with a little extra. 1.13 Mbps compared to the advertised 1 Mbps. You can ignore that 48 Mbps, it's basically the speed between your PC and the modem/router.

    Good to hear that!

Even with broadband this site is very slow today and last night I couldnt get through here at all!

Your friends pc probably only has a 10Mbps network card or network hub. Just cos your car speedo has up to 140 mph shown on it doesn't necessarily mean you can do that speed!

Im not saying it can. Im just reporting the speeds i find when I do the test, as someone asked me to.

I dont understand it all anyway, all I know is it's fast!

Unless the ISP provides a speed server themselfes, these results always should be taken with a grain of salt.

Burst speeds mean, that if you do a download, that initially you'll get the fast speed. If you download takes longer it'll slow down to the speed of the connection you actually pay for. It makes surfing faster as those are only small downloads, but limits you to the speed you actually pay for, when you make huge downloads.

After having 3i.e for the last 3 years I had forgotten how good it could be until I changed to wireless connect. Have a 20 gb download allowance and great connection and download speed. 3 was 20 euro a month for rubbish. now I get a fast connection and no hastle, 29-99
For those having trouble getting a good signal could be as simple as having a new building or tree in your line of sight.
