Hey all I'm looking to get an "Ultraportable" laptop(< 12.1" screen) and would like some advice. I'm just going to be using it for the basic stuff like word processing, internet and watching movies. I would also need built in wireless and an s-video out for watching films on my TV at home.

So would this be possible with a budget of €500 and what kind of battery life would I be looking at? Cheers

Ok so I was looking on on the Dell Outlet site and and saw a Dell XPS m1210 for €1100 delivered with the following specs:

    SYSTEM SPECIFICATION

Insprion XPS M1210 (System Identifier. EWR8D00B)
    XPS M1210 Duo Processor T2400 (1.83 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB

Operating System: Genuine Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
    Memory: 1024MB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2x512)
Hard Disk Drive: 80GB (7, 200 rpm) Hard Drive
Video: 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 TurboCache
NoteBook Screen: 12.1 inch WXGA (1280 X 800) Display with TrueLife with Integrated Camera
DVD Drive: 8X DVD+/-RW with Software (No Media
Software: BT, AOL, Tiscali ISP Combination
    English - Microsoft Works 8
    MISC: 65W AC Adapter
    English - System Documentation
    Primary 9-cell 80WHr Li-Ion Battary
    UK/Ire - (QWERTY) - Internal Keyboard
Intel Pro WLAN 3945 Internal Wireless (802.11a/b/g 54 Mbps) for Duo Processors

Probably wouldn't be able to afford it now but the same kind of spec on the proper dell website works out at nearly €1800

What you will find is that you will end up paying a hefty premium for the extra small screen. Would a 14 inch do you? You would probably pick up a clunky bottom of the range Dell for around €500-€600.

For a 12 inch or less screen, as you have seen, you are talking serious money.

    I'm with tom dunne.

The Dell 640m has better battery life and is the same size and weight as the M1210. But with a 14.1 screen. Quality of the Dells, and their screen varies a bit though. I've seen good and bad ones. But you have 7 days to return it if you are not happy, once you abide by the conditions.

Consider a Sony or Apple with the 13" screen either.

Down with that sort of thing!

Anyway just got a new job so I can afford the Dell m1210 now. Weight is the major factor for me and after that performance. As far as those requirements goes Dell seems to be the only thing reasonable I've come across.

The 11.1" ultraportable Sony Vaio laptops are €2000+ Their spec isn't even that good, seems your just paying for the fancy case and the Sony label?

Better screens is why you pay extra for the Sony.
